run in a frantic panic to “rescue” her from the fate which he was dooming himself too. They meet at the night communion where all around them evil is showing. Treetops burned into the night sky as fire crept all around the congregation of followers. The devil appears and begins to explain the truth to Goodman Brown how the people he thought he knew were really not what he believed them to be. He looked around and saw the faces of friends and acquaintances with which he was very close with during the day. But he was finally beginning to realize what had been hidden from him for so long. Trying to convince Brown and Faith that evil was righteous Satan said, “Now ye are undeceived. Evil is the nature of mankind. Evil must be your only happiness” (Hawthorne 318). In a last ditch effort to save himself and Faith from damnation he tells her to look upward toward heaven. He does so and before he can finish speaking the words he finds himself amid a solemn night. He then stagers into town and finds himself surrounded by the people he had accompanied the night prior at the witch gathering. Or was it all just a dream? The ambiguous ending leaves the reader pondering the possibility of it all being fake or actually having experienced a real gathering. This is when the reader is forced to think about the experiences that will lead them to a conclusion dependant on those experiences. ...
