There were so many people wanting to join IRA some had to be turned away. The British lost a lot of power in Northern Ireland and excepted all responsibility for what happenedGerry Adams is now the president of Sinn Fein which is an Irish nationalist political party. He was born on October 6, 1948 in west Belfast, Northern Ireland. In his earlier years he grew up as part of a working-class catholic minority that suffered social and economic discrimination. Adams finished his schooling in the 1960’s. After this he became strongly involved in civil rights movements and decided to become politically active by joining Sinn Fein. Due to Adams involvement with anti government demonstrations he was interned without trial for many years throughout the 1970’s. He was elected to a seat in the British Parliament, but never took his seat due to the requirement of swearing alegience to the Queen. He became president of Sinn Fein in 1983 and has held the position since. In 1984 Gerry Adams was severely wounded when some one tried to assassinate him. He recovered and continued on with his actions. He has never admitted to being a member of the IRA but many people suspect his involvement. Sinn Fein was formed at the beginning of the 20th century as a constitutional political party in Ireland. The party consisted of Catholics who wanted the British to withdraw from Ireland. Many see follow and believe in Sinn Fein because their against the violence of the IRA but want what the IRA are trying to accomplish. The relationship between Sinn Fein and the IRA has been totally symbolic. They have both said that they are two totally different organizations.
