Adams finished his schooling in the 1960’s. After this he became strongly involved in civil rights movements and decided to become politically active by joining Sinn Fein. Due to Adams involvement with anti government demonstrations he was interned without trial for many years throughout the 1970’s. He was elected to a seat in the British Parliament, but never took his seat due to the requirement of swearing alegience to the Queen. He became president of Sinn Fein in 1983 and has held the position since. In 1984 Gerry Adams was severely wounded when some one tried to assassinate him. He recovered and continued on with his actions. He has never admitted to being a member of the IRA but many people suspect his involvement. Sinn Fein was formed at the beginning of the 20th century as a constitutional political party in Ireland. The party consisted of Catholics who wanted the British to withdraw from Ireland. Many see follow and believe in Sinn Fein because their against the violence of the IRA but want what the IRA are trying to accomplish.
