In modern society we have come to place negative connotations on the word ghetto. Today, just to hear the word used in conversation makes us think of a run-down area with old houses, and cars that can barely make it to the gas station. But people also use the word to describe clothing, and attitudes. Ghetto has many different meanings, however they all somehow relate or tie in with one another. The most common use of the word ghetto is used in the cities. Brooklyn, New York is known for being one of the most urbanized areas in the country, therefore people consider it a ghetto The atmosphere of a ghetto city is always that of a run down, old looking city, overrun by the people and time. The houses are usually very small with various interior and exterior imperfections. They have no air conditioning besides their windows, which are almost always boarded up. So, when and where did the word ghetto ever come to mean this? Ghetto is also used to describe clothing. The brands “FUBU,” “Mecca,” and “Boss” are most commonly descried as ghetto brands. They have very bright flashy colors and are made with baggy themes. These brands, mostly wore by African Americans, are frequent in the inner city areas, thus making them “ghetto clothes,” and subject to the label given to so many things in the inner city There are some white people that wear these type of clothes, but they are referred to as “a wanna be ghetto.” Once again we see the word come into play, this time meaning someone who dresses as someone who comes from the ghetto. As you can see the term ghetto is used for all different kinds of reasons. Many times the word has a negative implication, but that is purely the work of our contemporary culture.
