History of Rastafari
History of Rastafari History of Rastafari There are many misconceptions regarding the Rastafarian movement. These misconceptions have helped to fuel the fire of ignorance, which has lead, many to believe that Rastafarians are “heathen”, “cult worshippers”, “devil priest”, “anti-Christ”, “paganistic”, “cannibalistic”, “long haired”, “witch doctors” who are to be feared and not trusted by anyone. These statements are far from the truth and absolutely have no credence. Many people question Rastafarians as to why, how, and when did the movement start? Rastafarians explain that Africans started the movement in the diaspora as an attempt to recapture and sustain the African dignity and culture as an alternative method to colonization and oppressive means of rulership by the European colonial powers during the post slavery era at the dawn of the 20th century. Picture colonial Jamaica of the 1930's, an axis of 400 years of exploitation of the masses in the name of the "motherland" England, a Crown colony maintained by the then British ruling class. Social rituals founded upon Anglo-Saxon ethics of church, state, morality, education and finance (social or otherwise) there on the island as in other colonies were nothing more than Britain removed to the Caribbean, "chips off the old block". Colonial society by then was socially and financially ordered according to "class and station" of White, Chinese, Syrian, Black, Jewish, Indian and Creole, down to the rock bottom dispossession of the Black suffering masses. Thus it was upon the poor Black psyche that the initial outpourings of the spirit of Rastafari was accepted and taken to heart; it offered salvation to those whose lot was little better than nothing - poverty in the extreme with/little or no hope of change for the better. Early Pan Africanist such as Dr. J.R. Love, Dr. E.W. Blyden, Dr. J.J. Thomas, had inspired the Rt. Hon. Prophet Marcus M. Garvey (John the Baptist fore-runner of Christ). The works and ideals of this great pioneer Pan-Africanist helped greatly in forming the U.N.I.A. and the A.C.L. 1914-1920’s. This organization would unite into one body, Africans from every nation, those at home in Africa and those abroad in the diaspora, to repair the damage done by slavery and colonialism. By educating them and teaching self-reliance is paramount if “black people” wanted to be free from economic dependence of the colonial master. Garvey was an orator and spoke highly of Africa (Ethiopia) indicating that “Africa is for the Africans, those at home and those abroad.” “Marcus Garvey was said to have fathered the Rastafari movement in his home land of Jamaica, just as it is he who gave the Rastafarians his world view and global perspective on life. It is the same Rastafarians who have in turn kept visions and memories of Garvey vividly alive. And, also, ever present in the minds and hearts of the everyday sons and daughters of the African diaspora. It is no surprise that the followers of Marcus Garvey went on to conceive a cosmology of creation and theology of divinity that went beyond what was called “traditional Garveyism.” By today’s standards Garvey was not himself a Rastafarian. He did not praise Emperor Haile Selassie I, Abba Janhoi, -Christ in his kingly character- the returned Messiah, as do Rastafarians. It is true he did not wear the covenant (dread locks) and did not use spiritual sacrament (herb). Asking if Garvey was a Rastafarian is like asking if John the Baptist was a Christian. The answer to both questions is no. But, just as “John the Ital Baptist Dread” was the forerunner and trailblazer for a man called Iyasus the Christ (Jesus the Christ) and Christianity, so too was Marcus Mosiah Garvey the forerunner and trailblazer for the man Ras Tafari Makonnen (i.e. Haile Selassie I) and the Rastafari culture. The Genesis of this grand epoch was in 1924, when Marcus Garvey had prophesized, “…look to the east, and when you see a black king crowned in Ethiopia…take him for your God and king.” Just as the worlds greatest orator prophesized, six year later on November 2, 1930, Rastafari Makonnen was crowned King of Kings, Lord of lords, The Conquering Lion of The Tribe of Judah, Elect of Himself, and The Light of this World, Protectorate of all Human’s Faith and Ruler of the Universe -225th king of the Solomonic Dynasty. At this glorious occasion 72 nations sent representatives to Addis Abba to witness the crowning of King David in the 20th century. However before such golden celebration could commence, Ras Tafari ordered King George VI to return the over 3000-year-old scepter that was stolen by the European oppressors years before. The Kings request was met in that King George sent his son Edward VIII the Duke of Gloucester with the golden scepter the symbol of divine rulership and authority over the earth sky and sea. Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David, his seed shall endure forever and his throne as the sun before me, and it shall be established forever as the moon and as a faithful witness in Zion (Psalm 89 vs. 34-37). The 1930 crowning was a well-publicized event, foreign press from all over attended including National Geographic, Time Magazine even Television coverage. The Emperor also had a special crowning miles away from the spotlight of the Jubilee Palace. It there that the Rasses (lords) chiefs warriors and peasants paid their respect to the divine celestial structure of the invincible one, who had come to advance Ethiopia towards the 20th century and beyond also to be the pioneer in the international struggle for human rights and justice globally. With the news of the Emperors crowning reaching the west the Africans that were scattered in Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands through slavery and the illegal 17th century triangular slave trade remembered the words of Marcus Garvey. Out of this glorious ceremony in Ethiopia, Africans in the west and internationally began to identify even more with their African origins and roots, hence embracing the Emperor as our “Black King”. Preachers and clergymen of all walks of life followed biblical prophecy closely searching for the correct passages to reinforce such truths of the “Black God”. “In the book of Genesis chapter 49 vs. 8-11, they read that God had promised the custodianship of His Kingdom to the Tribe of Judah. Moreover God had made an eternal promise to King David and King Solomon, that their throne and dynasty would endure as long as the moon and sun, and that David would never be short of a man child to sit on his throne, (Psalms 89). It should be noted the kings of this dynasty were not only the kings of Ethiopia, but the kings of the whole earth; representing the justice and judgement of God in human affairs, (see Psalms 72). When God’s people sinned he would punish them by famine pestilence and the sword, and he would scatter them to the Four Corners of the Earth. They would be ruled by a foreign power and be servants to other nations. But when they returned to God with all their hearts he would rise up one from the family of David and Solomon who would regather his people back into their own land. Then God had promised that by the seed of David, the Tribe of Judah, he would set up his promised kingdom on earth, which would be a light to the world. His people would return to their land and no more would they suffer. Introduction The Rastafari Culture is one of the most unique creations, which has ever manifested in today’s society. No other group of people has a more rich and vibrant history than that of the Rastafarian. Popularized throughout the Caribbean as Bob Marley, Sizzla,Buju Banton and others, Rastafari Culture has spread like wild fire into the hearts of the youth especially the poor and the lower class Africans throughout the diaspora. Why has this phenomena had such an impact on the minds of so many and why are they breaking away from so-called “traditional ways of life “ and adhering to something which mainstream society seems to disapprove? Rastafarians are an ethnic minority within the larger society their cultural traits, belief system, and ideology signify a subculture, thus the dominant group selectively isolates and denies them economic and political equity. Despite this Rastafarians have created for themselves an ethnic bonding which has helped to sustain them while they are residing in the west. The creation of this unique cosmology and its relationship to society will be the focus of this paper; Specifically the origins, history, language, cultural distinctions (i.e. food marijuana) and ethnic stratification of the Rastafari. Ital Food It is reasoned that the foods, which we eat, are the bearers of natural energies that are converted into physical forces and used by the material body in its daily functions. Many Rastafarians advocate the use of wholistic, non-processed foods of Mother Earth, which they call "ital", from the words "natural" and "vital".(Millard Faristaddi) Wholesome, earth born foods, fruits and juices are prepared in Ital ways or eaten raw for the most beneficial nourishment. Adherence to this "ltality' in one's diet is reasoned to be more helpful to the physical body and its natural functions than are the mass produced, mass marketed "supermarket" foods full of chemicals, additives, artificial flavoring and preservatives which Western society consumes as it's "daily bread".(Millard Faristaddi) Some Rastafarians prefer the wholistic Ital food to meat butchered in slaughter yards. To many, pork is considered unclean and untouchable, as are scavengers of the sea, such as the various types of shellfish. (Millard Faristaddi) Other types of meat and fish are eaten by those who are not exclusively vegetarian. Some Brethren are wholly vegetarian, eating Ital food in its raw state; others prepare, cook and eat only Ital food, excluding all meat from their diet. Some eat Ital food and certain types of meat, while still others prefer the while meat of fish or poultry in preference to red meats. (Millard Faristaddi) Views on meat eating are in part influenced for many by the Nazarite vow and the wish to adhere to what is natural and of the earth. However, it is up to each person to choose what is satisfying within the dietary range of wholistic eating. ROMANS Chapter 14; Verse 3: "Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth." (Millard Faristaddi) A gourd, an inedible fruit of varying size called "calabash", is used as a water container or bowl for eating and storing food and for a wide range of practical culinary purposes. The fruit is picked and cut into specified forms according to its functions; it is then scraped and cleaned and left to dry in the hot sun until the shell has become hardened. (Millard Faristaddi) The hard inner nut of the coconut is cleaned from the surrounding trash and used as a form of Ital cup, while pieces of the broken shell make utensils such as spoons for scooping and eating food. Solid truncated pieces of Lignum Vitae wood provide a cutting surface for the cleaning and preparation of herbs and vegetables. (Millard Faristaddi) Other types of wood are used to whittle howls, spoons, ladles and other Ital implements for the Rastafarian who defends the Ital way of life as a reflection and step towards a more wholistic and nature-orientated lifestyle which many Brethren reason to be more in touch with the earth. (Millard Faristaddi) Naturality, it is reasoned, surpasses all forms of materially sophisticated lifestyles because of its closeness to the Creator and His natural creation, a universe perfect in Itality. (Millard Faristaddi) For Rastafari, Ital and “Italistic” symbolize affinity to the natural and spiritual, unifying the material world with the inner “Irit”; the Ital way of life being one in keeping with man's ancient and more natural traditions which oppose the alienation so prevalent in modern society. Ital offers the most life-energizing way of sustaining the physical structure and inner spirit in their original creation. (Millard Faristaddi) The use of Herb Marijuana from Mexican-Spanish origins, Bhang or Indian Hemp as it is known in India and Pakistan, Hashish in Morocco, Tangiers and the Middle East, Thai sticks in Thailand, Sensimilla in the Hawaiian Islands, Santa Maria Gold of Columbia, Cannabis satira to the pundits of the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. (Faristzaddi) GANJA, as it is commonly hailed in Jamaica, is known more diversely as the Herb, Ishence, Kaya, Maka, Uey, Tampie, Colly Herb, Sensemilla Jerusalem Bread, Kings Bread, Lambs Bread, Weed of Wisdom, Solomon Herb and Strength among others. (Faristzaddi) The euphoric burning bush, the soaring tree of higher heights and deeper depths, grows naturally and profusely in the heavy tropical climatic conditions of the island's countryside. Ganja growers high in the least accessible regions of the interior cultivate acres of the Herb and it is reasoned that there is more than enough Herb to burn freely in Jamaica. The use of Ganja is confined mainly to the poorer suffering masses and the Rastafarians who experience the vibrations of the burning bush as a euphoric and mystical sacrament, capable of enlightenment and alleviation of the crucial reality of social alienation and abject poverty. (Faristzaddi) For Rastafari, the use of Herb represents a sacramant of the Church, Triumphant, serving creative thinking relaxation and reasoning amongst the Brethren. It is interpreted as a “Hola Herb” given to man by the Creator for the "healing of the nations". REVELATION Chapter 22; Verse 2: "In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." (Millard Faristaddi) As a general rule, the educated and more affluent classes shun any encounter with the Herb, laboring in trepidation before the mass media's adverse publicity of opposition and hysteria which has always accompanied the reality of the Marijuana plant. The steady flux of governments which have come and gone, have never up to this date "legalized it". There are periods of leniency, alternating with periods of criminalization when users are charged for possession of varying amounts. Ganja is taken as each individual sees fit. It can be prepared in the form of Ganja tea or Ganja wine, or used in foods. Usually the Herb is cut and cleaned of excess seeds on a wooden "suru' board. It is then blessed with a few drops of water, recut and rolled into conical-shaped "spliffs" of varying sizes or packed into the cup of a makeshift water-pipe known as a "cutchie" pipe or "chalice". The act of passing the chalice and sipping from the cup has become a reverential practice amongst the Brethren of Rastafari, who look upon this act with reverence towards the Creator as an invocation of his Almighty Universal power. (Millard Faristaddi) The Herb, when smoked in a gathering, symbolizes the act of unification or "Inity" amongst those gathered together in the sight of the Most I Jah. It is accepted as binding the participants together in the fullness and powers of the Godhead thereby creating a vibrating flow of mutual “Iditations” amongst those participating in this sacramental act. (Millard Faristaddi) Herb is used by Rastafari to enhance strength of “Iditation” and to reveal the divine and living presence within us all. The vibrations experienced within the temple represent the transmuting, rising energy-flow bearing revelations of the inner creative source otherwise submerged in the grosser reality of the mundane physical body. For the Rastafari the Herb-experience represents a positive act towards the Creator, and not a negative "end" as is so often the case in the Babylonian reference. (Faristzaddi) Rastafari will never deny the Herb. They partake of the inner burning vibrations and are aware of the fullness within one's physical body; they alone are the sum awareness and reality of their own experience. No amount of social rhetoric will sway the Rastafari’s attitude to their faith, or their beliefs concerning the “Hola sacramant”. (Millard Faristzaddi) The entire so called "ethical" and "medical" reality regarding the use of Marijuana rests solely with the individual conscience; one chooses as one sees fit.
