elf. Gimpel was a caring man who put a lot of effort into what he did and cared about it. The townspeople just took advantage of this; they did not care about the person inside. All they cared about what would make them laugh and make Gimpel look like a fool. I believe that not everyone agreed with the way Gimpel was being treated; but I do believe monkey see monkey do. People treated Gimpel this way because everyone did, most people will do anything to stay accepted by society. In the story Gimpel is the main character as well as the narrator. He is a man who is known as a fool who backs down very easily when it comes to confrontation with others. Gimpel catches Elka with another man beside himself but continues to stay with her. He does realize his first child is not his but he falls in love with it and will not let him lead the life he led. I believe Gimpel stays with Elka because he thinks he loves her, but in actuality it is just someone who is there. Gimpel is a lonely man who needs compassion. Elka does not treat him well, but for Gimpel she is a companion he longs for. Gimpel’s character lives in a small town called Frampol where everyone knows everyone, which does not favor on his side. The words we hear spoken from a fool are the townspeople who make fun of him everyday, because instead of treating him like a fool they should respect him more since he is the most successful man in his town.Gimpel doesn’t really have a pleasure principle (id) throughout the whole story. He basically just caters to other people’s ids like Elka and the townspeople. Gimpel’s ego is his strongest part; it’s the part that makes his behavior acceptable. We see little of Gimpel’s superego with he has a dream about the devil. The Devil tells h...
