L E P
L E P When I first came to high point, I had a lot of bad habits that I picked up while coming up throughout the high school system of my home country Trinidad & Tobago. I had a lot of unhealthy study habits which I never really took time to notice. I had horrible note taking skills, I had a very short concentration/attention span when I lacked interest in a subject and worst of all I had zero time management skills. Coming up in high school I was an intelligent and capable student but I never used to apply myself to my work. I would slack off during the term and do little or no work, as this only counted for 30% of my final grade. I would not attend class and I wouldn’t do most of the homework assignments in the classes that I did go to. When finals came around, I would put in a few weeks of really hard studying, as this was worth the remaining 70% of your grade, and end up with about an 80% or 75%, which in some cases would get me and A in the class. For the last three years of my high school life my main concern was soccer and it got to the point that I stopped going to all but one of my classes. All but one of my teacher actually cared about what I did with my life and I used this to my advantage. I was not the least interested in schoolwork, because I knew that I would be leaving on a scholarship no matter what I did in high school. I did no work at home whatsoever and always did my assignments in school at the last minute. I Barely made passing grades at the end of the term, but everyone else was getting bad grades too, so I blamed it on the school. Final Exams came and went, and by the time I had gotten my results. I had already well settled in to High Point University. When I was told that I had to do this course, I though that an Academic Development Course would be not only boring but a waste of time. As I said before, I thought that I was a petty smart guy. But as Dr. G taught us, our initial perceptions are normally wrong. Although ADV 101 was not the most exiting course in the world and it seemed to give us more homework then all my other courses combined. It taught me a lot of the fundamentals that I should have learned way back in high school. The first thing that this course taught me is that I should start strong, continue strong and end strong. Even though I may not have started strong, I really tried to put this into effect and I have seen a noticeable change in the level of my work. In this school, the grading system is such that if I tried to incorporate my high school method of doing things. I would be in a lot of trouble. Along with this start strong approach, I have learnt many different strategies for improving my academic standards. I have learnt techniques in Memory Improvement, Review Strategies, Note taking Techniques, Stress Management, Etc. All of which I can use to improve the level of competence in the in my academic ability As a person this courses has change me in that I have now settled in to the life of a college student. I have learned how to deal with and avoid some of the stress that I have to go through on a constant basis. I have learned the Importance of keeping my body healthy by proper exercise and proper nutrition, and I have learnt about my self and how learn better through my personal learning style. This course has set me well on my way to where I want to be in life by preparing me for the task that I have ahead. In this way I have become a wiser person, who has greater self-confidence and most of the tools I need to succeed in college. All in all I have learned many things from this course which will help me to be a successful student. Though most of these things are purely academic, I can use the others e.g. nutrition and exercise to help me even when I am out of school. As a person I have grown a lot in the last three months in that I think I have made the transition from a high school student to a college student. I have changed my general outlook on school on a whole as ADV has changed the way I think and operate as far as my schoolwork goes. Overall, I have learnt more than I expected to learn from this course. The knowledge that I have gained will have a huge impact on my success in High Point University, and I know that I will be successful. Bibliography:
