In 1871, Lewis completes the writing of Through the Looking Glass. Some of Lewis Carroll’s books are related to his life in many ways. Throughout his life, Carroll was fascinated by peculiar symmetries and odd-reversals, including mirror writing, looking glass worlds and the spelling of words backward (Hudson 262). His book, Through the Looking Glass, perfectly shows how his works are affected with his life. Lewis was also left-handed in a right-handed world. This is ironic due to his interest of odd-reversals.Carroll’s fascination with reversals is incorporated into his book of Through the Looking Glass. The character “Alice” in Carroll’s books is tied to him in this way. Lewis relates to Alice much to himself. Alice also has a lack of self-confidence just like Carroll. Her identity crisis is shown when she speaks to the caterpillar.I—I hardly know, Sir, just at present—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then. (Carroll 73)This passage indicates that Alice can only explain her current state of existence, yet she seems unable to explain how and why she grows and shrinks. This passage al...
