Love Conquers All
Love Conquers All When love is strong between two people it can outweigh the problems of a marriage, if the couple can work together in solving the problems. In the story The Gilded Six-Bits written by Zora Neale Hurston, you meet a couple very much in love, Joe and Missie May Banks. In the story Shiloh written by Bobbie Ann Mason, meet a couple who is not so sure of what they want, Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt. In these marriages there are a few similarities and a few differences. One difference in these marriages is why they married. Missie May and Joe married because they had fallen in love with each other. Joe would come home and play games with his wife every Saturday. They would laugh, play and chase each other around. Norma Jean and Leroy on the other hand, married because Norma Jean was pregnant with Leroy's child. They felt it was the right thing to do. Now the baby is dead and Leroy was injured while driving his big rig. He is home on disability now. Norma Jean is always working or exercising, Leroy is always home alone building craft kits. One similarity in the two stories is their mothers trying to help them. In The Gilded Six-Bits Joe finds his wife in bed with another man, Otis D. Slemmons. Their marriage was very rocky for a while. No more games were played or chasing each other around the house and no more candy kisses to get teased with. Missie May was going to leave his house when she ran into to Joe's mother. Joe's mother changed Missie May's mind about leaving and she went home. In the story Shiloh Leroy was always gone for months at a time and then Leroy was injured, leaving Leroy at home all the time. Leroy notices little things that have changed about his wife. Once again a mother suggests they get a way for a day and spend time together, hoping it might help. Another similarity in the two stories both involved a baby, one was in the beginning of the marriage and the other was not. In The Gilded Six-Bits Missie May became pregnant. They were not sure as to who the father might be, Joe or Otis D. Slemmons. When the baby was born Joe's mother came to him and said, "You ain't ast 'bout de baby, Joe. You oughter be mighty proud cause he sho' is de spittin' image of yuh, son." After the baby was born things at the Banks' house began to go back to normal. In the story Shiloh Leroy and Norma Jean married because Norma Jean was pregnant with Leroy's child. When the baby was four months old he died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). When the baby died the marriage just went with it. One couple stayed together and the other did not, another difference between them. In The Gilded Six-Bits Joe and Missie May went back to their old games they had always played. Joe would bring home candy kisses for her to find once again. In Shiloh Norma Jean left Leroy. They were not the same people they had once known. Their marriage was based on a child and not based on love. As Norma Jean and Leroy grew up When it comes to love nothing is stronger. When a marriage is based on anything but love, that marriage usually falls apart. In both stories there were many similarities and many differences. Missie May and Joe were meant for each other. As for Norma Jean and Leroy, there is someone out there that they can love. Many things can have an effect on a persons marriage. Such as a child, a mother, or why they were married in the first place. In these stories each one of these had an effect on both marriages. Some marriages stay together some split up. The ones that split up are usually for the better. Bibliography:
