Mainstreaming of Autistic Children

d not ask questions, which will lead them to not getting the assignment done, and then feeling like a failure, which will make their self-esteem lower.No one approach to teach the autistic children how they are expected to act, but many types of therapists are available. Some of the many types of therapists are behavior modification, speech/language, sensory integration, vision therapy, music therapy, and auditory training. Depending on the severity of the type of autism, and the age of the person will depend on what type of therapy they will receive. Autistics with a severe case are best addressed by a structured education and behavior program that contains a 1:1 teacher to student ratio, or small group setup. (Dorsi pg.3) Many students with autism are educated in separate special education programs. (Dorsi pg.4) Since autism is a lifetime condition, and also a low-incidence disability, few special educators ever have a student in their classroom. However, the growing trend toward full inclusion of all students, which includes those with severe disabilities, increases the likelihood that more of these teachers will have opportunities to teach children with autism. The teachers should focus on teaching receptive and expressive communication skills. This should begin with trying to get students to respond to simple interactions. (Dorsi pg.4) Promoting social interaction between children with autism, and those without autism, can be successful if engineered right. Some examples of this are playing board games in small groups, but should be supervised by an adult. It is important that the autistic child has played the game before so the child doesn’t experience defeat, or disability to understand how to play. A generation ago, 90% of the people with autism were placed in specialized institutions.
