Multi Dimensionality in the Seagull

yfriend, Irina demonstrates her highest level of selfishness, and neglect. This neglect, coupled with that of Nina proves to be too much for Treplev to handle in the fourth act, ending with Treplev's suicide and the play's unknown denouement.Although Chekhov supplies the reader with a final scene, Dorn telling of Treplev's suicide, the denouement of the play is kept from the reader. Although there are infinite conceivable results of Treplev's suicide, Irina's response is easy to predict, based on her character. Due to her self centered manner, it is likely that Irina will not blame herself for Treplev's death, but rather find another person or thing to blame, mainly Nina. Trigorin, due to his lack of concern for Treplev's well being, would act almost as if nothing had happened. The only character in the play who would feel meaningful remorse for Treplev is Sorin, who saw Treplev as almost a son because of his years spent on the estate without his mother. Masha's sorrow for Treplev's death would be based on her unproclaimed love, and not any serious feelings. Chekhov bases his play on the interaction between its characters, and develops the story from the results. Treplev's final unseen performance is a fitting end to a struggling dramatist. Nina's decision to pursue her acting career in Yelets results from her need to be appreciated, as she thought she was by Trigorin. Masha's life with Medvedenko is clearly aimed at ridding her of her love for Treplev, which consumes her throughout the entire play. However, she is unable to profess her love to him, and after his death never will. Dorn and Polina both squandered the latter halves of their lives, Dorn because of his extravagant way of living, and Polina because of her lost love for Dorn. All of the events of the play, the conflict, climax, complications, and denouement, are all a result of these characters personalities, and therefore, leave the reader prepared for them....
