Once the radio announces that the terrorist held hostage is to be killed, it becomes evident that John Dawson also must be killed. Elisha is to kill him at dawn, when all executions take place; the same time the other terrorist will be hanged. Elisha, Gad, Gad’s girlfriend, and some other members of “the movement” wait up all night until the execution. Elisha is experiences extreme anxieties throughout the night. When he was in Paris, a beggar had once told him that the way to distinguish night and day. He told Elisha that night has a face, and ever since Elisha had been able to see faces in the night. The night before the execution was a “night of many faces” Surrounding him in the small room above the basement where John Dawson was held, were the ghosts of himself as a child, his mother, his father, the many men he had killed, and the beggar who once confronted him. He seeks their approval, telling them he is not a murderer, but a soldier.Elisha realizes that he does not know John Dawson, let alone ever seen him. He knows it will be harder to kill a man you know, but he still wishes to meet him. The ghosts offer to come and help him but he says he wants to go alone. Despite the fact, that Elisha is to kill Dawson in a few hours, he opens up to Elisha. Elisha wasnt badly to hate Dawson and in him trys to find things he dislikes.
