Miscellaneous
None Provided26
None Provided26 My theme that I have found in every short story, poem, play and many other works was values or morality. At first I didn’t realize that there was anything but love in all the works. Without the help of Mr. Johnson, I would have never thought that there was anything but love in most of the works. As I read the works again I realized that there was more in the works besides love. I found out that there were morals and values but I didn’t notice it because of the fact that I didn’t think of them as morals but as society’s standards. In my case there are a lot of morals I follow that many people don’t think of morals. Don’t get me wrong, I am not an angel, I am far away from it. I think that societies morals are the ones that many people follow but that doesn’t make it necessarily right. Honestly in my own opinion I think every person has his or her own morals and it is different in every person. The basic morals that we think aren’t morals at but social rules. Murder is a moral that most people take advantage of, majority think that it is obvious that you just don’t do it but what about the people that do it anyway. I think murdering animals are fine with me because they aren’t human. I am only talking about the animals that we eat in USA and no where else because in other countries they eat domestic pets. What decides who are the killers and who aren’t? Many people realize that many short stories are fiction because it is very hard to believe. How do we know that they are actually fiction and not non-fiction? My meaning of fiction is things that are not real or made up from imagination. Many people may have different aspects of fiction because everyone has a different opinion. I just think that fiction could be made up in one-person eyes and the other person eyes it could be realistic. I just think it all depends on where you come from and your societies. It may also depend on your experiences in life because we all have different experiences that change our opinion on fiction. Short story has a plot, which means the order of actions. Action involves conflict and it falls into same five parts that are in plays. Which are: Exposition, rising action, turning point, falling action and conclusion. The first short story that I read is named Dreams by Timothy Findley. This story has one obvious moral that was broken, which is the biggest one of all in people eyes, murder. At least in my eyes, that is a sin and I honestly think it is in most people’s minds. People just don’t kill people because they are angry with a person, I think that is very senseless. I think “Dreams” is fiction because individuals can’t murder people in dreams. Although, strangely I heard of stories which people could leave their bodies during meditating but never about killing. As crazy as it sounds I am not sure if this is fiction or non-fiction but I think it is more fiction. In this case, it didn’t offend me at all because it was hard to believe someone can do that. If that was the case there would be many more murders in our life and there would be no protection against dream. “Dreams” is a short story that shows many things of which are morals. Another short story that better shows morals as an issue is The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. In most of Poe’s works it has to do with sick and miserable endings or mysterious. The ending was confusing to me but I understand that there was death of some kind. This ending was mysterious and Poe wants you to linger on the thought of what exactly happened. Cathedral by Raymond Carver is not about morals that deal with death but it is more about love. The story shows that if you love something enough you are able to do anything. It also shows that people with disorders or disabilities are still able to do everything that anyone can. I felt like there was a different issue other than morals in this story. The issue was treating everyone the same no matter what disability they have. Also don’t act differently in front of people with disabilities or think they are different because this story shows that they are not. The theme is don’t judge a book by its cover. I personally try not too but it is hard to believe that a blind man did everything that “normal” people do. No one would ever consider a blind man to do drugs or drink alcohol or many other things he did. People treat blind people with sympathy. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway is not about love at all, which surprised me because I thought most of the works had to do with love. I am not sure what this story theme was but it wasn’t about murder. I think it had to do with impression because they wanted to be known as a clean area or an area that has a good impression. Girl by Jamaica Kincaid shows many ways to act like a girl. It shows everything you need to know to “act like a lady”. In my opinion I think some of those things were ridicules because it is stereotypes about women cooking and other things like that. Although, this story had nothing to do with my theme I found it amusing to see how girls were suppose to act in that time period. Poetry reading should not be only for required reader but should be about feeling the poem. If you do that you will be more connected to “feeling” the poem. It will make you understand the poem on a more personally aspect. Once you have an understanding of the poem and have a personally aspect to the poem you will understand with a deeper and greater pleasure. Make a Stand by Dawn Evans is about crime and gangsters which result in death of children. It explains the needless killing of children and people have to make a stand to stop this entire killing. This value of murder is very real in gangs and to people in gangs but they don’t consider it a sin. Many children in gangs murder each other because they are defending themselves. This line is the best line because it just is very true and people should know there is a way. “If we come together and make a stand, If we let people know that WE WILL NOT tolerate, Only then will we put an end to crime and hate.” The idea of murder is not as surprising as it was many years ago…in my mind we are so accustomed to it. A matter of Morality and Immorality by Dawn Evans is about the inequality of the entire world. This poem has to be one of the best poems I have read in a long time. The poem is about everything, which the world takes advantage of and it will make, you think no matter what your morals are. My favorite line is “Life is full of many roads, many detours, many signs misleading us. Life is insane, unfair, immoral, unjust.” This line best describes the entire life process in my opinion. Sheltered by Jordan is about all things that are wrong in the world. It states so many things that are wrong and we can’t do anything about it. The poem explains how life would be like if we lived in a sheltered life. I have a couple of favorite lines in this poem which are: “Everyone is different both inside and out, Yet we all have a little bit of everyone within ourselves.” Another line I like is “Some people are afraid to give love, Others can't seem to give enough.” I think this poem is a great example of morals because it shows that there are so many different roads you can take. I could have been by Dawn Evans is about values but not about murder. Actually it maybe about murder because some people consider abortion as murdering. I just liked this poem because it just shows that abortion is killing a zygote that could have been the next president. It also shows that abortion is taken advantage of because it is sometimes used as a way of fixing a mistake that you did. The favorite line I think is “To you I was just an inconvenience growing within, Bad luck brought on by a moment of passion. Because you took my life when it just started to begin, You will never know --- what I could have been....” I just think this explains everything about trying to fix a mistake. Land of opportunity by Dawn Evans is about the homeless people of the USA and we don’t help them in any way. It also make me think that we help other nations but we should help USA homeless. Dawn Evans also states that if everyone shared there would be fewer people dying on the streets in front of our eyes. The line that I think explains the whole poem is “Why are there hungry children in this so-called land of opportunity?” Masks by Linda McBroom are about the many faces people put up to cover their real personality or self. This is also about values but it is not about my theme, which is murder. It just shows people that time will show the real face so it is better to be honest with everyone. The best line is “As time goes by the mask will fade leaving the real you And all the people you’re hiding from will see the real you.” Blame by Dawn Evans is about whom to blame for something happening in our lives. Don’t blame anyone but the person because the person as the choice to do what is right from wrong. It just states that people should blame no one except the person…not the society, not the parents BUT the person. The line that got my attention is “The mind has the ability to think and reason, blame the mind that does not think first.” Poor, Poor Baby by Sarah Carnes is about a mother not caring for a baby and just letting it die. I think this is a murder because the mother had a child and she then doesn’t take care of it at all. The line that stays in my head is “Forever will you be sad, for that day when you committed murder. The day you left him behind, to suffer, those last few hours.” How Sad by Lynn R. Trundle is about child abuse and about the pain of it. I personally can’t understand how parents could ever do that to a child for an innocent mistake. I honestly can’t even comprehend that any parents could do that but as I learned through life anything can happen. The line that sticks on my head is “How sad to see a child in fear, To be made to feel like they must disappear...” I have never felt this feeling but I could imagine how much it hurts inside to know that your parents don’t want you. Hope by Dawn Evans is just about the issue of hope and what we would be without hope. The line that I like the most is “Hope is nurtured by love alone. Without love hope would be gone.” I just think that this is why so many people have hope when they are in love. I have never heard of the poet which is Dawn Evans but I found her on the internet when I searched for moral poems…the site that I got all these poems are from http://www.poetryhouse.com/pmoralindex.html and I think you should read some of them. Plays are usually written to be acted out or performed on stage with actors and etc. Playwrights creates plays knowing fully that they have to use go beyond words and texts and expand to physically actions, stage devices and many other things that help the production. Antigone by Sophocles, Creon and Antigone have a distinct conflicting values. Creon’s regard for the laws of the city results him to forget all other beliefs, moral or religious. He feels that all should obey the laws made forth by him, even if other beliefs, moral or religious state otherwise. Antigone, on the other hand, holds the beliefs of God in high regards. She feels that the laws of the gods should be obeyed above all others, especially when in respect to family. Creon has a very strong opinion about the laws of the city passed by him. His methods of enforcing these laws are very strict. In “Antigone” Creon orders that Polyneices will not be buried because of his dishonor towards Thebes. He stated if anyone is caught burying him they will be killed for disobeying his order. Polonices is Antigone’s brother. He is being punished because he attacked Thebes and betrayed Creon and the people of Thebes. Creon's harsh punishment on those who disobey the law makes many fear him and dare not to go against him. One example is Ismene's regard for Creon's laws. She tries to talk her sister out of burying her brother because of what could happen to her if Creon found out that she went against him. Ismene says "We must obey them.....I yield to those who have authority". Not only do the people of Thebes obey the laws of the city because of their fear but because it is a shame to dishonor the king. To go against the kings’ claim and dishonor the law is to die a more shameful death then Antigone's mother and father. Antigone does not want to let her brother be left without a proper burial. Her belief is to show respect and love towards her brother she must bury him. Her beliefs in "The sacred laws that Heaven holds in honor" are far more important than those set by the king.” She feels that the king cannot override her belief in the gods. Antigone feels very strongly about burying her brother against Creon's orders. She refused to back down from her opinion even when confronted by the king and sentenced to death. Antigone reasoning is: "It was not Zeus who published this decree, nor have the powers who rule among the dead Did not impose such laws as this upon mankind; Nor could I think that a decree of yours- A man-could override the laws of Heaven Unwritten and unchanged". She goes on to say that she does not want to go before the gods after she had disobeyed them because of a decree made by a mortal king. The loss of a brother is greater to Antigone then the lose of any other kind. She says, "For had I lost a son, or lost a husband, Never would I have ventured such an act against the city's will. And wherefore so? My husband dead, I might have found another; Another son from him if I had lost A son. But since my mother and father have both gone to the grave, there can be none Henceforth that I can ever call my brother". To Antigone this is another reason to honor her brother; as she honors her brother she is honoring her mother and father as well. Creon, being a new king, wants to prove his abilities as king. He is being harsh, so the people of Thebes don't take him for an easy king and other problems arise. Creon feels that if someone dishonors the city in which he rules they must be punished. If Polyneices is not punished then Creon's power may be taken for granted by the people of Thebes. They would think of him as a weak king who can be dishonored without fear of punishment. Creon wants to be respected and feared as a king because this will give him more power. He does not want to be a bad king, using his power for evil things, but a strong king. However in order to be a strong king, one must be strict and firm in one's decisions. That is the kind of king that Creon is. Creon is a strong king because Thebes is important to him. He wants to be respected. He also wants Thebes to be a great city. Antigone and Creon have different ideas of what is right and what is wrong. However one cannot say who is right and who is wrong, that would be a matter of opinion. Both Antigone and Creon have their reasons for their actions. Antigone has the laws of heaven as well as her family in mind; on the other hand, Creon's concern is his city and its greatness. In “An Enemy of the people” by Henrik Ibsen, Doctor Stockman loses the respect of the community as well. In this story, he’s come back to the small town he grew up in to try and give something back through his experiences and learning. Stockman wants to be respected by the community. The town thrives on their springs that bring in tourists. When Stockman finds something wrong with the water people at first believe in and support him. His brother, though, knows that the problem with the water which is numerous problems and ruin for the town. The community, not wanting ruination for their town, turn against Stockman. The towns with his brothers’ persuasion believe him to want to purposely destroy the town. This is devastating for Stockman because the respect he had worked for and wanted so bad was now lost. Stockman refuses to accept this though and fights them because he thinks in the end they will know he did the right thing. Thomas Stockman though if an individual has a chance to help society, then most would take that chance. He risks his and his family’s lives to try to save their town. They then made it perfectly clear that they didn’t want him there; but he wouldn’t leave. He stayed at the end with the angry mob at the foot of his doorstep. In the play, Thomas says, “A platoon of soldiers are walking a road toward the enemy. Every one of them is convinced he is on the right road, the safe road. But two miles ahead stands one lonely man, the outpost. He sees that the road is dangerous, that his comrades are walking into a trap. He runs back, he finds the platoon. Isn’t it clear that this man must have the right to warn the majority, to fight with the majority if he believes he has the truth? Before many can know something, one must know it!” This shows that the majority is not always right and one man can show the majority the right thing. Also, before many can know something, one person must know it first and tell and explain it to this majority. My conclusion to my theme is Morality, love, reality and lose is all connected together. Each theme may at first sound different but once you think and listen to all of them they are all similar in many ways. I also think that many of the themes that were said in class tells about the persons personality and what they think about. This is why we are asked about them by many times in class…so we can explain and open up in class. Bibliography:
