critics Mill by saying that his philosophy for utilitarianism was, fit only for the swine. This simply means that his views are fit for the perfect person. Pleasure for one person is completely different for the next person and there is no set standard to live by for the contents of pleasure. Several critics do not agree with Mill. Critics have condemned pleasure as the promotion of interest of a person with no regard to the happiness of others.Man has the intellectual capacity for reason and he should aspire for something more. So pleasure keeps multiplying. You get a million dollars, in a few years you will have the desire for more because the pleasure of the million is gone and you want more to fulfill the pleasure. The Happiness Machine states if you were able to go into a machine that would grant your world with all the happiness you could ever desire, would you do it. The problem with the machine is, it is an artificial thought and as a human being we need to have real experiences. Just as stated before how would you know real pleasure, desire, or love if you didnt know the pain that they deal with. The stranger in town also presents a problem. If a complete stranger walks into a town it violates the justice of that person because he is thrown into the minority. If he walked into the town he would have to trust the man at the gas station for directions to the next highway. The stranger in town is innocent. Mill sums up his theory by saying the reason why the general happiness is desirable, except that each person believes it is attainable, desiring his own happiness. He points out that utilitarianism is not a selfish motivation that does not take into consideration the desires of others. Happiness is desirable to society as a whole.
