Oprah Hello my name is Oprah Winfrey I am a television talk-show host, actress, and producer. I was born January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. After a troubled adolescence in a small farming community, where a number of male relatives and friends of her mother, Vernita, sexually abused me. So I moved to Nashville to live with my father, Vernon. I entered Tennessee State University in 1971 and began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville. In 1976, I hosted a TV chat show, People Are Talking, and A.M. Chicago. My open, warm-hearted personal style had won me 100,000 more viewers took my show from last place to first in the ratings. I launched the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 as a nationally syndicated program. And gained of my new production company, Harpo Productions. I pledged to keep my show free of tabloid topics I became almost as well known for my weight loss efforts as for her talk show, lost an estimated 90 pounds and competed in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, in 1995. “Oprah’s Book Club,” as part of my talk shows. The program propelled many unknown authors to the top of the bestseller lists and gave pleasure reading a new kind of popular prominence. I am the most powerful and wealthy people in show business. I am a dedicated activist for children’s rights; in 1994, President Clinton signed a bill into law that I had proposed to Congress, creating a nationwide database of convicted child abusers.
