One of the most original and beautifully written books you will ever read. The decadence and filth that manage to co-exist in Grenouille's world are utterly disparate yet morbidly fascinating and Patrick Suskind has portayed them both with unerring accuracy and conviction. Even a writer whose subject is beautiful may not write in an attractive manner, but Suskind manages to visualise decay, poverty, stench, perversion, opulence and innocence in a style that does not fail to find it's mark. I suppose Grenouille is what would be termed an anti-hero, yet would have been far less enthralling had he been a six-foot adonis, as his outer unsightliness seems to focus all attention and importance on his wonderful gift. Like looking at a road accident. Horrible but you do look. Compelling and sensual, the cold and unfeeling character of Grenouille creates and aura of sensuality. An epic and chillingly appropriate finale ensures this will live on in the memory. ...
