fer from market, and increase in money supply and credit. To help achieve thesedesired changes, the Granges and Alliances were created. The Granges and Allianceswere organizations formed to help bring the farmers together, and help them to makecooperatives so as to make a profit. These two systems were a large step in the emergenceof the Populist movement. The Granges were first started by Oliver H. Kelley, an Agriculture Departmentofficial. The Grange came first and was created as a social organization for farmers. TheGrange system wanted to bring farmers together to learn new scientific agriculturaltechniques, create a feeling of community between farmers, and organize cooperatives. The Granges were temporarily successful, but eventually failed because of inexperienceand opposition of the middlemen. The decline of the Grange movement made way for theFarmers Alliances. The Alliance started in Texas in 1877 and welcomed men and womenalike. They, like the Granges, formed cooperatives so as to free the farmers from thedependence on the large corporations. The Alliances spread quickly, but still had some ofthe same problems the Granges had like inexperience, and the middlemen getting in theway. These frustrations helped push the movement into a political organization. TheAlliances issued the Ocala Demands, which were the partys platform, at a nationalconvention in Ocala, Florida. At the convention, candidates supported by the Allianceswon partial or complete control of the legislatures in twelve states. After the convention,there was a great sentiment for a third party to be formed, therefore, a meeting was held inCincinnati to discuss the issue. Many Alliance members, and some members of the Knightsof Labor showed up to support the movement. Then, finally, in 1892, the creation of thenew party was announced at Omaha, Nebraska and a set of principals and candidates forthe presidency were approved.
