Princess Di
Princess Di Diana Spencer was born July 1, 1961. This date was the start of one of the most remarkable individuals in the world . She was once quoted as saying, ”One minute I was a nobody the next minute I was Princess of Wales, mother ,member of the royal family and it was too much for one person to handle” (Morton story,104). The Princess of Wales struggled throughout her life due to bulimia, an unhappy marriage, and the media. Diana’s astrologer, Felix Lyle, quoted, “Diana comes from a privileged background, but she had a childhood that was very hard” (Morton, Story 12). At the age of six Diana’s father and mother got a divorce. Diana’s thoughts of rejection, trust, affection, guilt, and the absence of her mother, made her feel more like a nuisance than a member of her own family (Morton, Story 11-13). Growing up as a pre-teen Diana always admired her older sister Sarah. Diana had always respected her eldest sister Jane, but found Sarah more interesting. Diana followed in the shadows of her sisters and attended West Heath Boarding School, which she attended until the age of seventeen. At the age of eighteen, Diana felt that she wanted her independence and a life of her own. She moved into her own apartment in London. She shared her apartment with her school friend, Carolyn Bartholomew. She also befriended two girls who worked for a cleaning company, Anne Bolton and Virgina Pitman. Shortly after moving into the her apartment, Diana found a job working as a kindergarten teacher at the Young England Kindergarten (Morton, Story 60 ). Diana was once quoted about her love life as saying “I knew I had to keep myself tidy for what lies ahead” (Morton, Story 62). Diana had lots of boyfriends .The individuals she dated were clean-cut, well bred, reliable, and good-company. She often would try to get Sarah’s old boyfriends to ask her out but she never succeeded. Although most of her attempt’s to get an old boyfriend of Sarah’s was unsuccessful, she did win one gentleman heart. In November of 1977, Sarah had invited Diana on a weekend gathering with her and her current boyfriend Prince Charles. Diana once told friends, “I kept out of the way I remember being pudgy, no make-up, an unsmart lady, but I made a lot of noise and he seemed to like that”(Morton,Story49). He seemed to have liked her more than she thought, after that he invited her to his thirtieth birthday at Buckingham Palace in November 1978. Even though Diana was not Charles date for the evening she felt like a queen because she had gotten invited, and her sister was a little jealous. After the death of her father, Charles and Diana became much closer. They attended royal gatherings and other private affairs together. On Friday, February 6,1981, Prince Charles asked Diana Spencer to marry him. On July 28,1981, the fairy-tale wedding took place. Diana Spencer married the Prince of Wales at St. Paul cathedral as 750 million people watched on their television sets (Morton, Story 95). After the wedding Diana hoped for peace, ,privacy, and for things to turn back to reality. Then she began to understand that she was the Princess of Wales, and she was going to be more fashionable (Morton, Story 95,86). She told friends “I was the one who always pitched out front, whether it was my clothes, what I said, what my hair was doing, everything when actually we wanted to be, what we wanted was our work and as a team”(British Broadcasting Company 7). No one ever told Diana what they expected of her as the Princess of Wales; she took the role upon herself(British Broadcasting Company 3). The first year of her marriage, Diana tried everything to be the perfect wife and the perfect princess. Her astrologer spoke of her perfectionism as ”One of the worst things that happen to her was she was put on a pedestal which didn’t allow her to develop her in the direction she wanted to go, but no one forced her to be concerned about image and perfection”(Morton, Story 135).Not only did it force her to be to perfect, but it also forced her into emotional and mental problems as well (Morton, Story 95). The pressure of her royal life and the truth of her marriage caused a fatal eating disorder known as bulimia, which she would struggle through her royal career (British Broadcasting Company 6) . She was very depressed, made several suicide attempts, and also mutilated her self (Morton, Story 105). Charles tried to sympathize with Diana problems, but always acted as if there was never a problem. Neither He nor the royal family ever showed any kind of praise(Morton, Story 107). The author of Diana’s autobiography, Andrew Morton, refers to Diana’s jealousy as, “Diana led a confusing double life where she is celebrated by the public, but watched in doubtful and often jealous silence by her husband and the rest of the royal family” (Morton, Life 198). Diana’s media attention had become more than she had expected. When Charles and Diana were out in the public eye the media would focus mainly on Diana. Charles became jealous of all the media attention Diana received (British Broadcasting Company 3).A former member of the royal house hold said “Charles never expected this kind of reaction. After all he was the Prince of Wales. When he got out of his car people would groan .It hurt his pride and he often became jealous” (Morton, Story 121). He would blame Diana if the tabloids would say something negative about the royal family. Charles was not the only one whose jealousy was wrecking their marriage, Diana was also jealous. When Diana and Charles were married, Diana had a feeling that Charles continued to see an old girlfriend, Camilla Parker-Bowles, on a regular basis (Morton, Story 4). On November 5,1981, Diana announced she was pregnant and the jealousy became more believable through the entire pregnancy (Morton Story 112). Diana was always finding evidence that the two were seeing each other. She found notes, letters, and one time Diana answered the telephone and it was Camilla asking for Charles. The jealousy continued to cause her more pain through her marriage. At 9:30 p.m. June 21, 1982 ,Diana gave birth to a baby boy, which meant that someday he would carry on the throne of the monarchy (Morton, Story 112). It took several days to name Baby Wales. Charles wanted to name him Arthur, but Diana’s choice was William. They chose to name him Prince William Arthur. In 1984, Diana found out she was pregnant again. This time Charles was hoping for a girl. A sonogram had already shown that their second child was going to be a boy. It was a secret Diana kept until September 15, when Prince Harry was born. Charles was not to happy of the outcome of their second child. He just looked at Diana and said, “Oh it’s a boy”, and left for his polo game. Diana told her friends about the reaction of Charles by saying, ”Something inside me died” (Morton, Story 126-127), This was the starting point of their marriage falling apart. The tension of the royal couple’s marriage often resulted in shouting matches, and the arguments got more tense as the marriage came closer to the end (Morton Life 10). In 1992, Diana and Charles separated and Diana left the royal family (Morton, Story 205). When Diana and Charles made their decision to let the public know of their separation, they made sure that their children were protected (British Broadcasting Company 11). Diana once told a close friend: I had so many dreams as a young girl. I hoped for a husband to look after me, he would support me, encourage me or encourage me or say good job. I didn’t get any of that and I couldn’t believe it. I no longer want want to live someone else’s idea of what and who I should be. I am just going to be me. (Morton, Life 92) When Diana began her new life she wanted to change, but did not want to stop doing good services for other people. She told a reporter once; “Anywhere I see suffering, that’s where I want to be, doing what I can to help” (Morton story,160). She spread her joy to patients suffering form cancer, children who suffered from numerous things, and A.I.D.S. patients. Newspaper reporter Barbara Harrison quoted her as: She inclines her body and applies her hands and her lips to lepers, to babies with amputated limbs, and to frail A.I.D.S. victims. She gathers her children to her heart with almost violent ecstasy of tenderness. I cannot believe someone would do that in the name of public relations.” (Harrison 13)Diana never did her charity work for the publicity; she did it because she felt that was her obligation. In 1994, Diana and Charles got a divorce. With the divorce behind her Diana tried to live her own life. She went shopping, called friends, and spent time with her kids just as a normal mother would do. Diana’s life was never as normal as she wanted it to be. The paparazzi, a tabloid photographer group, was making her life miserable. They followed her from the time she left her house until she would return home (Morton Life 92). Diana’s life was finally getting to where she wanted it. She had her life, her children, and her happiness was returning. She also had a companion, Dodi Al Fayed. Diana met Dodi ten years ago at a polo game where he was on the opposing team of her then husband Charles. They had a long-standing friendship before the media ever accused them of being involved (Chua-Eoan 34). On August 29,1997, Diana and her companion Dodi Al Fayed dined at the Ritz hotel. At 12:00, shortly after they left the hotel, they were pursued by the paparazzi. Their car enters a tunnel at a high rate of speed and side-swiped a wall. Dodi and the driver were killed instantly. Diana was alive, but she was suffering from chest injuries, a massive wound to the left lung, and numerous broken bones. When Diana reached the hospital, doctors found her barely alive. The injuries caused massive internal bleeding. After two hours of trying to keep the princess alive, she was declared dead at 3 a.m., London time (Chua-Eoan 33). Diana’s death was not the only a shock to the royal family, but it shocked the entire world. Diana, Princess of Wales, was an extraordinary person. Her life was filled with times of tragedy and triumph. However, throughout these times, Diana found the strength and courage to continue with her good deeds. Prime Minister Tony Blair described Diana best when he said, ”She was the people’s princess and that is how she will stay in our hearts and memories forever” (Chua-Eoan 37). She really was a true princess. Bibliography:
