SACA She was in the tribe of the Shoeshine ,Indian tribe which lived in Idaho, parts of Utah and and she was was born in Eastern Idaho in what is now Salmon, Idaho. Some of what she did has been recorded and it is relayed here. At about age 10, she was captured by a raiding band of Hidatsa and carried to their camp near the border of North Dakota. Eventually, they sold her to a French-Canadian fur trader named Toussaint Charbonneau. The Corps of Discovery had camped for the winter at Fort Mandan in North Dakota which is where Charbonneau was also spending the winter. When winter broke, she was hired to guide Lewis & Clark due to their little knowledge of the country where they where. He was specifically instructed to bring her, along Jean Baptiste for a number of reasons. First of all, the presence of a her and her baby would establish the peaceful nature of the party. While Lewis journals make very little mention of her. Her knowledge and mountain passes saved weeks of travel time. Clark was so taken with her, and so concerned about at the safety of her he did everything to try to protect her. For her efforts in making the expedition successful, Lewis & Clark named a river "Sacajawea" in her honor. Sacajawea is one of the most greatest female person alive becasue if it was not for her United States would of never have western settlement. Bibliography:
