Salerno

Salerno is in the Campania region in southern Italy, at located west of the Irno river on the Gulf of Salerno, southeast of Naples. The beauty of the summer season makes Palermo most inviting for tourists. Salerno was an ancient Roman colony in the 197 BC. Before that it is known to possibly be Etruscan, called Irnthi. In 646 AD, it became the capital of Lombard until it was conquered by the Norman Robert Guiscard in 839 AD. Attacked and ruined by the Swabian Hohenstaufens in 1194, it was rebuilt by Giovanni da Procida, hero of the war of the Sicilian Vespers against the French (1282) and a native of Salerno.After 1419 passed through many hands and phases before being known as the Kingdom of Naples. Students from Europe, Asia, and northern Africa in the 11th and 12th centuries traveled to Salerno for its renowned medical schools. These were of the first medical schools in Europe which is why Salerno’s history is associated with them.In World War II, the Salerno coast was littered with soldiers and bombings between September 8-18, 1943. This battle was between Italy’s Allies landing forces and the German Empire. Parts of the old ancient City suffered great damage before the British Army arrived from Calabria and forced the Germans to withdraw.In the crypt at St. Matthew’ Cathedral is the sepulchre of St. Matthew, whose body, according to legend, was brought to Salerno in the 10th century. The cathedral also contains the tomb of Pope Gregory VII. It is said that the Cathedral was founded in 845 and then rebuilt between 1076-1086 by Robert Guiscard. The province of Salerno has celebrated and dedicated Saint Michele’s life throughout this historical period. This dedication to him goes back to the 9th century and you can see this in the wonderful frescoes in Salerno.
