Their performances were crazy and lengendary. Bassist Sid Vicious helped the band gain notoriety with his insane performances. "One night nobody was payin' any attention to me, so I thought I'd commit suicide," Vicious said. "So I went in the bathroom broke a glass and slashed my chest with it. It's a really good way to get attention. I'm going to do it again -- particularly since it doesn't work. They all said I didn't cut myself enough to be realistic and ignored me." He laughed, then added "You better not make a fool of me in this article." After being dropped by E.M.I. for their "disgraceful.... agressive...behavior, the band quickly resigned to A&M Records, who subsequently dropped them six days later by executives who were worried about the bands message. The only label that would sign them was the hippie label Virgin. The Pistols released the single God Save the Queen under Virgin in May of 1977, only to have it banned soon thereafter by BBC Radio. Virgin managed to get Boots's, Woolworth, and W.H. Smith stores lift their ban and agree to stock the bands new single Pretty Vacant/No Fun.The Sex Pistols first album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Heres the Sex Pistols, released in October of 1977 with tracks such as Anarchy in the U.K. and God Save the Queen became a quick target for the British censors. It became the #1 album in the country and yet the Billboard chart refused to print the title on its chart, so the top spot in the chart was left blank. A Virgin Records storeowner was arrested for displaying a poster of the album cover because it violated a 1898 Indecent Advertising Act.
