Spike Lee portrays rap music and rap style as commercially suitable to the mainstream audience even though it raises political questions. With Summer of Sam, Spike Lee combines the actual Story of David Berkowitz (aka the Son of Sam) with fictional characters to create an impression of the events that took place during the summer of 1977. The film is presented as a historical retelling of the Berkowitz story, yet the most meaningful part in the film is not when Berkowitz murders brunette after brunette and is eventually taken into custody. Spike Lee illustrates the most meaningful moment when he has two of his main characters, Dionna and Vinnie, step out on a Saturday night to go dancing and they note that something's wrong from the emptiness of the parking lot before they enter the disco.
