Spike Lee Do The Right Thing vs Summer of Sam

the viewer into the lives of these characters similar to the way he takes us (the viewer) into the lives of Mookie and Sal (in Do The Right Thing). The former couple's (Vinnie & Dionna) marriage is dissolving due to Vinnie's sex affairs, and the fact that his immoral-like sexual preferences, does not correspond with what goes on in his marriage bed. On the other hand, the other couple's relationship develops over the narrative. Ritchie, who has an interest in punk music, which is apparent by his clothes and hair style, becomes an outsider in the neighborhood even though he grew up there. As a result of his appearance and attitude, Ritchie is an embarrassment to the neighborhood guys, whose activities include selling drugs and talking about the so-called "freaks" that exist outside of their little world, while hanging out on a dead-end street. With this in mind, Spike Lee brings out the aimlessness of their lives symbolized by the mise-en-scene. It is Ritchie, portrayed as a punk rocker and sometime gay hustler, who enables Ruby (considered a neighborhood slut) to imagine a life outside of the Italian cultured neighborhood, and ironically, Ritchie(the hustler) and Ruby (the slut) form a meaningful association in the film. In Do The Right Thing, Spike Lee uses the Love Daddy to voice his dismay over the racial differences that led to violence at the end of the film. He equally indicates the richness of black culture in a sort of rhythmic salute to a potential 'Wall of Fame' for the community to call its own. With the Love Daddy, Spike Lee demonstrate a 'roll call' which represent a voiced collection of names such a Duke Ellington, Anita Baker, and Aretha Franklin. The 'roll call' is visually matched with a montage of the neighborhood's history, its older people, Mother Sister, Da Mayor, and Patrolling police for example.
