It is a slow but steady process, eight years ago, when this project was launched, then it was too difficult to convince the women and their family members. But now in most of the villages women at least know about this scheme. The awareness level has gone up and so is the number of its members. However, statistical data on the incidence of domestic violence in India is scant and the few studies which are available indicate that physical abuse of Indian women in their homes is quite rampant. A survey, spanning seven Indian cities and covering both rural and urban populations, reveals that 45 per cent of the women surveyed had been subjected to at least one incident of physical or psychological violence in their lifetime.
