THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED
THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED Elizabeth Dole was no ordinary individual. She was a woman of character, morals and standards. She was a female who wanted to hold the world in the palm of her hands. She was willing to sacrifice all that she had to make a run for President of the United States. Dole became a symbolic candidate who was cherished and worshipped by many females and younger girls. They looked up to her and saw a woman who wasn’t afraid to stand up and accept the challenge, knowing that if she had gotten elected she would have been the first female President ever. Elizabeth Dole headed a crusade and gave faith to the American women. Women could not vote for the longest time and then they did something about it. Well, it is not that women cannot run for President, they just chose to not do so. Elizabeth ran for President but eventually dropped out for reasons that unknown. However, she began something that in my opinion will not die down for a while now. When Elizabeth Dole ran for the position of President of the United States of America, she really didn’t make a good run at it. She did not do all that she really needed to accomplish to gain the top position. Granted she ran and eventually dropped out of the race, but she never really had anything sketched out in detail about what she was going to do. Elizabeth also didn’t really discuss some issues that she should’ve addressed to the public. It was with little things that she did not do that really brought her campaign down. Mrs. Dole was a woman who had achieved a lot for a woman who was running for possibly the most powerful position in the world. I believe that goal could have been hers if she just would’ve stuck with it. Mrs. Dole had not been chosen for the position due to the fact that she had dropped out of the race. A Republican Commentator, Laura Ingraham stated, “She never really gave us a blueprint.” Elizabeth Dole had never really gotten her act together. She really just went with the flow, but to be president you need to have more than that. Everything should be planned out and at least having an idea of how things should be. Elizabeth Dole never made gender an issue. Dole had two choices. She could either chose to act as a groundbreaking individual and go over issues that pertain to women in general. Secondly, she could address her gender and then move swiftly onward. It turns out that gender was not a big issue in the eyes of Dole and so rarely addressed the matter. The public believed that Dole should have made gender an issue because she was the first female who ran for president. That is not just something that we see everyday here in America. There is ethos used within the minds of the public and other various people of the media. “Any time there’s a woman running for president, it is history-making. Schroeder states that, ”in terms of impact, Dole was stymied.” “Conservatives who liked her had to deal with someone they liked doing something they didn’t approve of”-running for president. And frankly, when women began this century without the right to vote and end the century with one of their own running for presidency…this will go down as a marker,” says Kellyanne Fitzpatrick, a Republican pollster who worked on Dan Quayle’s presidential campaign. The quotes that people say are actually speaking the way that they feel towards Elizabeth Dole. Some despise her running and then dropping because they feel that this individual had a great chance. Some believe her to be a coward and then there are those who feel that she was making a statement. Supporters of Elizabeth think that women are finally getting their chance in the Whitehouse. Even though there are no females there yet, loyal supporters know that slowly, the world is changing. This candidate was also using a lot of pathos during her campaigning. She was always seen with a great big smile painted upon her face. No one would see her scream, cry or cuss. She would shake the hands of other females and gain their support. The article on Elizabeth Dole makes her out as a phenomenal woman in the beginning paragraph of the news clip. A picture of her shows the sweet lady who is now a symbolic figure in history. Robin Givhan writes,” With her eyes glistening and her face a mask of chipper resolve, she spoke the words that must be heartbreaking for any candidate.” Mrs. Dole is made out as a person who believed in something great and etched a path in the presidential campaign. She is an astounding female who believed in what she was doing! Logos comes into play when the republicans talk about how they have supported republican women for the past ten years. With having Elizabeth Dole running for president many people really didn’t know how they felt. There were mixed feelings dealing with the issue. Many females, little girls etc. wished to have Dole become President and to see a change in the way things had been ran. The males and other majority of society believed that with a female president our nation would not be strong. The males expect a man to be the leader of a country because he is stronger than most women are. With a female as leader of a country you will automatically believe that that nation is weak, merely because of a female. Another assumption made in this campaigning was that if Elizabeth had addressed gender she would have come out on top. People thought that if she had really spoke about how she happened to be a female, then more and more would understand her views and feelings about what goes on around us. Elizabeth never talked about her gender though and so she really didn’t accumulate all of the votes that she could have. In conclusion, there were many things that I saw that were wrong with Elizabeth Dole’s campaigning. She gave up after only a little while. She did not stick with it. No backbone was found within her because she gave up too early. Elizabeth could have addressed her gender but wished not to do so, she felt as if she were just like every other male out there, and didn’t want to feel any different. The article could have provided more information on why she was not really looked into that much besides being the only female to ever run for president. Bibliography:
