The Acura NSX is a prime example of a car that raised the baruncomfortably high for other car companies. This time they targeted a muchdifferent segment of the auto market. The NSX was aimed squarely at the likes ofPorsche, Ferrari, and Lambroghini. The NSX was a supercar, also known as anexotic. (These are actual designations of cars. They mean, generally, anextremely expensive, extremely high-performance car.) It was the first major useof aluminum in a production car, (the frame was constructed of it, as were thesuspension components) and the first application of variable valve timing. 7It was also much different from the other exotics of the time in how it wasbuilt. The companies who made these cars had become quite set in their ways, andquality, reliability, and ergonomics were all going down the tubes. Of course theywere ungodly fast, but they were not comfortable to sit in, not made with qualitymaterials and workmanship, and not mechanically reliable in any sense of the word. The NSX had these things stitched into every fiber of its being. After all, this was aHonda, and by the 90s, people had come to expect reliability and comfort from thispioneer of tiny motorcycles. The traditional supercar makers were shocked. Ofcourse they had marquee buyers, but this new Honda was irresistible. They knewthat the instant that prospective buyers saw this easy to drive, Civic reliablehellfire performance machine, they would move towards it like affluent moths to aflame. Within a few years, things had changed. Exotics no longer exemplified anolder British car in their material and workmanship aspects, and were morecomfortable to sit in and use.
