Furthermore, Hickerson attempted to push across his own view of affirmative action and what role it plays in our society, telling us that it still needs to be in place and that it’s easy to be a “racist, backwoods idiot…” I find this statement simply outrageous. Affirmative Action creates as many problems as it solves. Governor Bush is not against giving people equal opportunity to earn the same amount as everyone else, or letting people become what they aspired to become. Bush is simply against racial quotas and giving people jobs based on their skin color, albeit white, black, Hispanic, etc. Governor Bush believes if the people really want something, that they should work for it. Under Bush’s “Texas 10 percent plan” the top 10 percent of every high school class are automatically admitted into any state college or university. This plan is not based on income, race or gender. This presents a clear and equal opportunity to anyone that wants to make a valid attempt to achieve his or her dreams. Every student that is willing to put fourth a valid and legitimate effort is rewarded with Bush’s 10 percent plan. Under Bush, if you are willing to work for your opportunity and education, he is willing to meet your needs. Hickerson talks about hiring minorities as role models to others. It is my belief that hiring someone solely in a role model or celebrity purpose is nonsense.
