The Responsibility of Freedom

Together our society has decided on what rules we should follow for the general well being of our society and also we have created consequences for those who decide to break these guidelines. I think existentialism definitely has its applications in our modern world. Existentialism does not try to give us an answer to cure all the ills of the world; rather it gives us a new, unique perspective by which to see the world. Sartre believes that humans create themselves; “It is only through consciousness that a human being can come to under stand itself, and through its acts that it can create a self.”2 I like thinking that I am a being created of my own experiences and determines my own self and essence without a pre-determined reality. This gives humans ultimate freedom. It is argued that there are internal and external restrictions imposed upon us, which limit our freedom. To existentialists freedom is a curse and a blessing because we find ourselves isolated in the universe to write our own future. However, “the awareness of one’s freedom and its total engagement in action can be conductive to the achievement of an authentic or meaningful life.”3 However, we should not be afraid to exercise our freedom. I believe we must take charge of our world and feel free to take risks. We are ultimately free but we must be aware of the consequences of our actions. Let the existentialist point of view open our eyes. The past is irrelevant and the future is yet to be determined so live in the now. Don’t sweat the small stuff because, “’…happiness is the only thing worthwhile.’”4...
