Tiananmen Square 1989

A government that sends them to school to learn to be independent and at the same time strips them from their personal rights of being educated, to express their feelings and beliefs, as well as being free. The anonymous male stands in the face of four tanks. Each tank over powering in size and weaponry. On the brink of death, he is willing to plea for the cease of the demonstrations that were killing hundreds of his fellow Beijing people. Can a single human being make a difference? Can he stop the forces of evil, dead in their tracks? Jeff Widener captured this miracle in a single snapshot that has become famous over the years. When people refer to the tragic incidence at Tiananmen Square in 1989, they remember and see his photograph. The photograph captured the feeling and sense of pride, courage, bravery, and awe-inspiring imagination of the whole world. From a fourth floor balcony, Widener stood waiting for the perfect moment to take his photograph. The balcony provided the opportunity for an ideal view. Many people do not know that the night before, on the same road seen in the photograph, shootings from the men in the tanks killed many and the most from the massacre. The rioters lined the streets unknowing of their fate. They were unaware that the ammunition was real and not merely rubber pellets. The bullets were in fact phosphorous covered which made them glow in the darkness of the night. FI Widener had sat out on the same balcony that night, a bullet would have struck him in the head or neck and would have killed him. Instead, it was found embedded in the cement wall of the hotel.
