The girl being exposed to horrific influences, does not mean those influences exist as ghosts, but it does justify the governess's instincts that the children were not as innocent as they appeared.When the governess and Miles are left alone, the dialogue between them continues in James' ambiguous style, each talking about not being alone because they have the others'. The others' are never named so we are not sure whether Miles means the other staff, or is admitting the existence of the ghosts of Quint and Jessel, but we do know that the governess interprets the others' as the ghosts.In their final conversation, it transpires that Miles had been expelled for saying things' and the governess becomes alarmed that perhaps he is innocent after all. When she urges him to tell what these things' were, Quint appears to her again, and her hysterical reaction in turn alarms the boy. It appears to the reader, that the boy sees nothing at all, but is being terrified by the rantings of his governess, which in the end frighten him to death, unless her passionate, hysterical grasp literally suffocated the poor boy.In the final analysis, there is no real evidence that the ghosts' exist and no other witnesses. Although we only have the governesses word, her rational account of the events is convincing, especially when she suggests herself, that her suspicious behaviour and paranoia do seem absurd, and even insane in the normal course of things. It is only as the story draws to a close and the children's disconcerting behaviour can be seen as a reaction to the governess's own actions, that her story loses conviction. There obviously were inappropriate goings on at Bly before she came, and the uncle's aversion to any involvement with the children is strange, creating a mysterious aura around the story.
