UCF reseach The University of Central Florida was established in June of 1963 as one of the ten universities in the State University System. The construction began in January of 1967, and the first classes started in October of 1968. The original college population was 1,948 students. The population has massively increased since the beginning. The preliminary fall enrolment for the year 2000 was 33,291 students. UCF is located in one of the most rapidly growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. It is 13 miles northeast of downtown Orlando; there are also upper division campuses at Brevard and Daytona Beach. Orlando is the nation’s number one tourist attraction. Students are near Orlando Magic, Church Street Station, Kennedy Space Center, major film studios, Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. Also, the campus is less than an hour away from great beaches. The president of the University of Central Florida is Dr. John C. Hill. He became the fourth President of the University of Central Florida on March 1, 1992. President Hitt has articulated five major goals for UCF: · Offer the best undergraduate education in Florida; · Achieve international prominence in key programs of graduate study and research; · Provide an international focus to the curricula and research programs; · Become more inclusive and diverse; and · Become America's leading partnership university. The symbol of the University of Central Florida is the Pegasus. Pegasus was the winged horse of the muses in Greek mythology. He carried their hopes , their aspirations and their poetry in to the Skies . Pegasus is as futuristic as tomorrow’s space exploration in Our solar system and into the universe beyond .The seal also bridges The gap between the humanities and space technology The academic programs offered at UCF vary from academic to sports. The academic programs include: The NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Department include: Men’s: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, and tennis. Women’s: basketball, crew, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, Their sport’s clubs include cheerleading, crew, water-skiing and rugby as intercollegiate club activities. Several thousand students participate in our intramural sports program. In total, there are over 240 special interest clubs. Also, Greek life is very popular at the university. The university cannot guarantee on-campus housing your first year, but students will have a good chance if they register early. UCF offers on-campus residence halls, new modern apartments, fraternity and sorority houses are also an option. One can choose from: Single room in Lake, Osceola, Polk and Volusia Halls Double room in Lake, Osceola, Polk, Volusia, Orange, Seminole and Brevard Halls Double room in Citrus, Flagler, and Sumter Halls Single Bedroom at Lake Claire Courtyard Apartments Living arrangements also include meal plans so students have affordable, easy-access meals throughout the semester. BOARD OF REGENTS, MINIMUM UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS Students who have a 3.0 high school GPA and a 1000 SAT or 24 ACT, as well as no unit deficiencies, will be given priority admission.
