eir own government system that they had developed over time. When the Europeans settled in Africa they totally dismissed these government and inflicted their own government on these people. In Things Fall Apart, the elders of the village make the laws, which the people live by. They also have a ritual called the Egwugwu in which the leaders of the village dress up as Gods and give laws and direction to the villagers. When the Europeans get there they dismiss the laws the elders have made and live under their own government. At one point a villager influenced by a European leader unmasks the leaders during Egwugwu, which in their society is totally unacceptable. As more and more control was turned over to the Europeans, the power of the villager’s law got weaker.Other changes that occurred in Africa were that of the market and of behavior. The market of Africa changed, and it was no longer just trade between each village. The market was now bigger for people in Africa and they could trades goods at longer distances. In Things Fall Apart there is reference that new money flowed because of the value of local products, and the economy flourished. A change in behavior was also present in Africa. As the Europeans came they brought their culture with them and also their belief of what was right or wrong. In Things Fall Apart, if someone from one tribe kills someone from another tribe the tribe that had someone killed retaliates by killing someone from the other tribe. Kind of like an “eye for an eye.” This was not acceptable in European culture. There’s was not an eye for an eye system and it was seen as barbaric. Other changes in behavior were due to the Africans new link to the advanced world as they were now able to reap of the benefits of the Industrialized world.When Europeans started to trek into Africa they did not realize the profound effect it would have on all parts of the native African’...
