What makes a hero

lthough Schindler, at the beginning of the war, was solely interested in making money, that gradually took second place to his new goal, saving as many Jews as he was able to. One of the things that set him apart from his fellow profiteers was how he treated his workers, particularly his Jewish workers, since he treated them much more humanely than others did. Since his business had special designation, when his Jewish employees were threatened with deportation to Auschwitz, he was able to claim exemptions for them. (“German Rescuers...”).One of the things that Schindler did to help ensure that his workers stayed alive was the falsification of workers’ records, listing children as ten years older, or the elderly as 20 years younger. He also listed housewives and other “unqualified” workers as metalworkers, or mechanics, so that those who would otherwise be exterminated were saved. The Gestapo was not totally unaware of what was going on. However, they only had small bits of evidence, not enough to convict Schindler of anything, although they did arrest home several times and interrogated him on charges of “irregularities and of favoring Jews”. (“German Rescuers...”).In late 1944, Plaszow and all its sub-camps were forced to evacuate because of the advancing Russian forces. Most of the camp inmates – more than 20,000 men, women, and children – were sent to extermination camps. When Schindler got the order to evacuate, he approached the appropriate section in the Supreme Command of the Army, and managed to get the official okay to continue production in a factory that he and his wife had set up Brunnlitz, in the Sudetenland.
