Right before Schindler fled, the Jews he saved made him a gold ring, made from the gold fillings of men who had willingly donated it for that purpose, and on it they inscribed “He who saves one life, saves the world in time”, which is from the Talmud. (Bulow “Why...In the final days of the war, right before the Russian army came into Moravia, Schindler managed to smuggle himself back into Germany into Allied-controlled territory. By now, he was penniless; however, Jewish relief organizations and groups of survivors supported him modestly over the years, helping to finance his, in the long run unsuccessful, emigration to South America. (“German Rescuers...”).When Schindler visited Israel in 1961, the first of sixteen visits, he was treated to an overwhelming welcome from 220 enthusiastic survivors. He continued to live partly in Israel and partly in Germany. After his death in Hildesheim, Germany in October of 1974, the survivors brought his body to Israel, where it was buried in the Latin cemetery on Mount Zion, Jerusalem. On July 18, 1967, Yad Vashem (the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Museum) decided to recognize Schindler as “Righteous Among the Nations”. One June 24, 1993, Yad Vashem decided to reconfirm their original decision and to extend the recognition to Schindler’s wife, Emilie.
