For instance, having the ability to take what seems to be a stressful situation and defusing it by letting a little humor into the environment. After reflecting on that simple technique he uses I was able to recall quite a few times when things have seemed unbearably intense in a situation and then someone cracked a joke and the whole thing seemed a little less important in the long run. Slightly a different circumstance however very much alike, is the value of “driving a soft bargain”. Here again McCormack uses an alternative way to look at the problem at hand and ultimately finds a better solution then what he originally set out to do. In this instance I leaned that initial gestures of generosity and reasonability can foster longstanding mutually beneficial business relationships.Another quality that I believe has helped McCormack become so successful is that he shows an incredible amount of persistence in his dealings. Take for example, Rockwell International and it’s President Bob Anderson, when Anderson came into the position McCormack suggested that Anderson might benefit from producing a promotional video that would feature various work sites of the multi-national organization. At the time Anderson thought it to unwise to immediately create such a loud presence in the company when his predecessor’s name still appeared on the door to his office. McCormack did not push the subject but rather appeared to store the idea in his memory until a more appropriate opportunity arose to take advantage of it. Sure enough five years later (at the time of this book’s publication) Anderson and McCormack are on the verge of producing a video that should help to link the multicultural company.
