He was neglected in his childhood. Winston Churchill served in Sudan, India in 1899 with the Malakand Field Force. He was captured sometime between late 1899 and early 1900. He escaped captivity, becoming a national hero. In 1900, Winston was elected to Parliament. He retired from Parliament in 1906 as a Liberal. He was President of the Board of Trade from 1908 - 1910. He also served as Secretary of State for Home Affairs. Churchill was a British statesman whose goal was to pursue to interests of liberty. In W.W.I, Churchill was active on many fronts. His roll in W.W.I was controversial; it almost destroyed his career. Winston Churchill developed the Royal Navy. It became the first powerful weapon against Germany.
