It is clear that these individuals create characters very much like themselves in general because half of the surveyed said that they were not very different from their characters. This leads me to believe that they create another version of themselves but try and correct the features and traits they find disturbing about themselves.In addition to being able to control ones personal features, most teenagers are dissatisfied with their surroundings and with their everyday lives and again, those that took this survey reflected this in their answers. Nearly half replied saying that they would definitely live the lives of their characters if given the chance and another fifth said that they would probably choose the characters life over their own (see figure 2). Of those I surveyed, there was no significant difference between the amount that played pen and paper RPGs (such as Dungeons and Dragons) and those who played RPGs online. Admittedly, this surprised me because I would have thought that the majority of these players would want to play online where their anonymity could be preserved (see figure 8). When asked bluntly whether they believed that rpg players created characters that wree an idealized version of themselves not one of the nearly 900 surveyed answered no. While the slight majority answered that it was a possibility, 369 of the polled said that they definitely believed that players were trying to portray revised self. Although this might not necessarily mean that they themselves do this, it is very likely that they have noticed this behavior in others. After all, it is easier to point out actions such as this in those around you rather than yourself.
