on what was to be used to resolve the slavery issue in the territories. Northerners primarily didnt really approve of the decision, because they did not want slavery to expand into new areas. One of the major proposals discussed upon was The Fugitive Slave Act. This Act was another compromise agreed on by congress and passed on September 18, of 1850. The Act stated that since slaves were property and ownership of property extended across state lines, owners were within their rights to cross state lines to retrieve their runaway slaves. Furthermore the law also said that law enforcement officers were charged with the public trust to protect person and property and were, therefore, held to be responsible for the capture and return of slaves to their owners. Free state or slave state, no state was safe for slaves from apprehension and re-enslavement anymore. Every free state in the country disliked this Act, because they thought why should they help in something they strongly disbelieved in.Henry Clay in my eyes was the hero of 1850. Not only did he propose and pass the Compromise he also made most Americans living at the time, Northerners and Southerners, happy with the new ways and new rules. But their happiness would disappear in time....
