hen news came of Edmund’s death, Ella rushed home to find her dead child. This guilt of abandonment would haunt her for the rest of her life. All these stories of Eugene’s family life are told in his last work: A Long Days Journey Into Night. Eugene didn’t want this released until 25 years after his death because this was more of a revelation than a play. This play received a Pulitzer Prize. This was regarded as his best play. All of Eugene O’Neill plays were built around drama and human feelings. In Eugene O’Neill’s final period of playwrighting, when referring to himself he always used the name “Edmund”. Usually when he referred to his mother in his plays, he used the name “Mary”. This was because Ella went to St. Mary’s School as a youngster and always had a certain love for it. Eugene O’Neill’s schooling began at Mount Saint Vincent. Only a few miles away from Jaime, now enrolled in St. John’s College and Prepatory School, Eugene was allowed visits; and often Sarah or his mother showed up. Eugene was much different than that of other boys. While the other boys were out playing games and climbing trees, Eugene was found under a tree with a book; gazing out at the Hudson Bay. It was known at an early age that Eugene had a love for all kinds of literature. He was almost always found with a book, always secluded from everyone else. All his life people found him an enigma. His reputation as a bookworm and a loner followed him for the rest of his life. Eugene was described as having nine or ten personalities in one; and was described as a very stubborn man. Russell Cruise, a close friend writes: “O’Neill is one of the most charming men I know, and I’ve known him for twenty-five years, but I can’t say I understand him. His face is a mask. I don’t know that goes on behind it, and I don’t think anyone else...
