kkkkkkkk The Tour de France, also known as "the tour," is held in Europe every July. This cycling event is one of the most mentally and physically demanding events in the world. Each rider has to be ready to endure twenty days of competition. With persistent exhaustion, more than two hundred athletes compete head to head from the rolling hills and valleys, to mountain peaks, to city streets of Europe. Lance Armstrong, who suffered from testicular cancer had but overcame the odds of a fifty- fifty chance of living, amazingly won two back to back victories in the tour. The first win was unexpected of him and definitely surprised everybody. The second tour, Lance Armstrong was clearly going to win race. He once said, "If you ever get a second chance in life, you've got to go all the way." The tour is the survival of the fittest, which Lance has shown. There are many cycling competition, but none of them that are as demanding as the tour. The course lies mainly in France, but passes through many other countries such as Belgium, Spain, England, Germany, and Switzerland. The race starts in Futuroscope, Belgium and ends in Paris, France, with two thousand two hundred-fifty six miles to travel within twenty-eight days. The Tour de France is a stage race, which means that the course is divided into sections (stages). Throughout the grueling competition, there is a stage everyday that offers several challenges such as endurance, performing in time-trial races, climbing, and sprinting. Upon winning a stage, the winner receives money and prizes that is usually split amongst the team due to their excellent teamwork. Each stage is timed and the cyclist with the lowest cumulative time wears the maillot jaune (yellow jersey), also known as the current leader. The cyclist with the lowest time total at the end of the race receives the yellow jersey, as a symbol of a trophy, in the ceremony that is held in Paris, France at the end of the tour. Every cyclist in the tour belongs to a team. A team is more than just the cyclists themselves. A team is comprised of a coach or coaches, bicycle mechanics, cooks, cyclists, and a team physician. (You can go on briefly explaining the roles of each like….A coach takes care of the workouts and daily routines, etc??? The bicycle mechanics obviously repair and fix the bikes; but they are also at the race as the cyclists ride, in case they need roadside assist. Moreover, as cyclist attempt to complete a stage race, each team is supported by a vehicle, which carries spare tires, extra bikes, first aid kit, and food and drinks when needed. Where as the team physician would know each cyclist team member’s medical history and is there when medical problems occur. Each team has a leader, who is known to be the best all-around cyclist. The other teammates, also known as “domestiques,” help and give their support to the leader in many ways. Some of the responsibilities of the domestiques are shielding the leader from wind (which is also known as “drafting”), supply food and drinks as they ride, offer support to the leader while climbing hills(…how?? )and the most important is to go after cyclist who have broken from the main group(…why is that important????). One of the teams’ major support comes from their sponsors. The sponsors’ main purpose is for financial support. Majority of the teams are sponsored by big corporation such as the United States Postal Service, Power Bar, Trek, Project Rudy, (which are all sponsors for the United States’ team, known as “United States Postal Service Team” alone), etc. (…then you can go on about what the benfits are for being a sponsor…like advertisement ‘world wide’ for a world known race- is the main benefit, etc..) Lance Armstrong shows athleticism in cycling and triathlons. As a teenager, he was a top swimmer, which enabled him to enter many triathlons. In addition, he was on the Junior National Cycling team before he even graduated high school. During that time he had won the United States Amateur Championship; and everybody noticed that he would become someone great because he was young, strong, and talented. He was expected to win the tour in 1996, but his life changed after coughing up blood after a ride. Lance Armstrong saw the doctor and informed him that he was suffering from living. Several years later, after recovering from cancer, he defeated all odds and won the Tour de France 1999. During the Tour de France 2000, Lance has proven too many of his competitors that he is the best cyclist. A critical stage in the tour is the climbing stages that take place in the mountain; as soon as the cyclists rode up the mountains, it was pretty clear to the riders who was going to win as a result of Lance’s superior mental and physical strengths. Lance’s two main competitors were Jan Ullrich (…of the team/ or country????) and Marco Pantani (…of what team or country???), both who have won the tour within the past several years. Ullrich had the talent, but he could not get his act together when it mattered (…for example, or what do you mean???). Pantani, later in the race, dropped out from over exhaustion. Lance was the overall leader of twelve out of the twenty-one stages in the tour; which has not been done since Greg Lemond in 1993. Furthermore, he held the second fastest time during a time trial at 53.98 kilometers per hour. Lance Armstrong won the race with a lead time of five minutes and thirty-seven seconds. In the future, he will try to accomplish other races such as the 2000 Olympic Games, which are held in Sydney, Austraila. This will be another race to show who is the real champion cyclist is in the world. The tour is for those cyclists that can cope with tremendous mental and physical exhaustion for a period of two weeks (..in the beginning of the paragraph you said the race was 28 da Bibliography:
