Parents have the primary role in helping youth be successful and helping them avoid involvement in at-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse or criminal activities. Parents efforts can be greatly enhanced, however, by other adults (advocates) who come in contact with youth. Adults, not just parents, need to recognize that all have a stake in developing youth. Grandparents, elders and older adults can be a great resource-they often possess abilities to foster values, beliefs and develop potentials in youth which others are unable to do.
