(CP/Tom Hanson) The Senators defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 Saturday night at the Corel Centre. Though the Senators won their game, they had to settle for second place overall in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey clinched first and the right to home ice advantage for the first three rounds of the playoffs with a 2-0 win over Montreal Saturday night. Patrick Lalime made 35 saves for his 36th win of the season, as the Senators won the season series against the Leafs 4-0. "We got behind early," said Leafs coach Pat Quinn, who must await the outcome of Sunday's Carolina-Pittsburgh matchup to see whether his team will face the Senators or the New Jersey Devils in the first round. "It's certainly not the kind of game I thought (the Senators would) get out of us." Ottawa had called up three players from Grand Rapids of the IHL to fill in for several players with or resting from injuries, but the replacements didn't arrive in time because of flight delays. Despite being short on skaters, the Senators got up for the battle of Ontario with four first period goals, including three on the power play. Wade Redden had two goals and an assist and Alexei Yashin had a goal and an assist to hit the 40-goal plateau for the second time in his career. "The guys had a gusty effort to play hard like that being short-handed," said Redden. "It was a big game. Patty was there for us again, stopping a lot of shots." Andreas Dackell and Jamie Rivers had the other Ottawa goals. Sergei Berezin had two goals and an assist for the Leafs and Yanic Perreault added a goal and two assists. Nik Antropov had three assists for Toronto. Curtis Joseph finished with 29 saves. "They started really good and our problem was we took some penalties," said Joseph. "One (goal) was a great play and one was a lucky bounce." Of the game's eight goals, five were scored on the power play. Ottawa finished 3-for-8 on the power play; Toronto went 2-for-5. "Tonight, we created some scoring chances, but unfortunately we came up short," said Perreault. Ottawa opened the game's scoring at 8:51 of the first period on the power play. McEachern made a beautiful cross-ice pass to Redden who snuck in from the point behind the Leafs' penalty killers. Dackell and Perrault traded goals before Berezin tied the game 2-2 at 14:42. Rivers re-established the Senators' lead and Yashin made it 4-2 before the end of the frame. In the second period, Antropov worked to keep the puck in the Sens' zone, dished to Perrault who found Berezin in front of the goal. Berezin took the puck and shovelled a backhand off the goalpost and past Lalime to cut the Sens' lead to 4-3. But that was as close as the Leafs would get. Redden iced the victory at 4:25 of the third when he sent a blue-line blast by Joseph for his 10th of the year. "We played short-handed for a while in the first, we battled back but we still found a way to give them the lead back," said Leafs captain Mats Sundin. Bibliography:
