poli sci Things Fall Apart: Okonkwo Banishment Scene Okonkwo: Clansman who murdered Ezeudu’s son. Obierika: Clansman who is best friend of Okonkwo. Dzenu: Eleven year old son of Okonkwo. (Scenery: Remnants of a festive evening that occurred the night before clutter the ground in front of Okonkwo’s hut. Okonkwo sits on a wooden stump in front of one of his wives huts. It is a dim morning. The clouds hover over the village and the usually raucous village remains quiet. It is winter. The trees are barren and dark gray. Oknonkwo’s wives and children are wailing in the background and no visitors can be heard arriving amidst the noise. Okonkwo sits as begin to friends arrive.) Medium shot, Obierika at a quarter turn, early sunlight lighting. Obierika (to Okonkwo): Umuofia will lose a great warrior today. Okonkwo: Why must a man suffer so deeply for an offense committed inadvertently? Extreme Close up, full front, eye level angle, early sun lighting. Obierika: It is possible that your gun was not the one that murdered the young boy… Okonkwo did you hear what I said? Extreme Close up, full front, eye level angle, early sun lighting. Okonkwo: Placing blame where it is not due will not solve my problems. I have committed an atrocity. There is no denying it. Extreme Close up, full front, eye level angle, early sun lighting. Obierika: What then will you do? Will you flee? Medium shot, Obierika is at ¾ turn, Okonkwo at ¼ turn, eye level angle. Okonkwo(He stands as he begins to speak): There is only one solution… I must go to my motherland. Obierika: If you exile yourself you will not be able to return for seven years. Okonkwo: I have considered that already Obierika. My concern is not when I can return. My concern resides behind you in those grass huts. Obierika: How will your children eat? Okonkwo: I have faced adversity before Obierika and I now it well enough not to fear it. Medium shot, Obierika is at ¾ turn, Okonkwo at ¼ turn, eye level angle. Obierika: Oknonkwo you will no longer be a respected clansman. You will be an outsider for much time and those who would help you in Umuofia will not help you in Mbanta. (As Okonkwo speaks the morning sun illuminates his face.) Extreme low angle, full front ,medium shot. Okonkwo: What then should I do? Should I run like a scared prey? No. I should abandon my blood! A true Umuofia clansman could never do such a thing. (The camera then moves to Obierika’s “reaction shot” at a close up, full front shot to the burned landscape of the village of Umuofia at a circular panning shot from a 30 foot focus distance. Then back to Okonkwo.) Extreme low angle, full front ,medium shot. Oknonkwo: My children will eat. My children will eat if it kills me. Medium shot, Obierika is at ¾ turn, Okonkwo at ¼ turn, eye level angle Obierika: You must also care for your wives very closely. For if you fail to treat them properly they will not be able to serve your needs. (As Obierika speaks Ezeina and Dzenu appear from the grass hut with teary eyes and heavy hearts.) The medium shot is taken from extreme right with Obierika at ¾ turn, Okonkwo and Ezeina at full front and Dzenu at ½ turn. A dark cloud temporarily subdues the sunlight. Ezeina: Oknonkwo what will our future bring us? We are all frightened. Obierika: Everything will be all right Ezeina. Your husband is making plans for you. Okonkwo: Do not hide the truth Obierika. Perhaps you have not heard from others that we must leave Umuofia. We will be leaving soon. Close up, Full front, eye level angle. Dzenu: Father, what have you done that has brought this family so much trouble? Okonkwo: Dzenu, one day you will be old enough to understand. For now remember that your father is a man of tradition, a man who respects and fears the earth goddess. Obierika: The earth goddess has demanded that your father leaves Umuofia and you must go with him. Close up, full front, eye level angle. Dzenu: I do not like the earth goddess! The earth goddess is will never make me run away from my clan! (Dzenu runs off into the hut at bird’s eye view, the shot then moves to an extreme close up, full front shot of Okonkwo then the same shot of Obierika. Both have a look of worry and defeat. The last shot is an over the shoulder shot of Okonkwo sharing a stare with Obierika as the image of a cross formed by the branches of a barren tree is visible behind Obierika.) Bibliography:
