RU486
RU486 In today’s world, the subject of abortion is a very controversial issue. Some people are totally decided on pro-life or pro-choice, but most are somewhere in between and have mixed feelings. Abortion has been a very important issue since the early 1980’s when the topic started to gain popularity. Since then, horrible things have happened to put abortions in the hot seat. There have been bombings on clinics, murders of abortion doctors, and protests that have turned violent. There should be a more discrete and private way to have an abortion without all those hassles. There has been development of a new pill that can help to cool down some heated abortion issues. The new pill is called the RU-486, or commonly referred to as the morning after pill. If the new pill is made legal, it can create a private way for women to have an abortion without having a surgical procedure done, and the pressures of the surrounding world would not be there influencing their decisions. The Russell-Uflad Company developed the RU-486 pill in France in 1980. The women of France greatly hailed the development of this pill. It was said to be safer, easier, and more private since the pill can be taken at home, or in a doctor's office instead of a hospital. The pill has proven to be very effective and has found its way to the United States, but is only tentatively approved. Why should it not be approved if it could be an easier, more private way to have an abortion? Over half a million women in France have used the RU-486 pill and there have been very few cases reported with serious side effects. (Banwell 82) The side effects have only occurred in 4 percent of the women who have already used the pill. The side effects have been so minor that most of the women did not need medical attention. People who are pro-life see abortions as gruesome since they are surgical procedures that take lives by scrapping or sucking the fetus out of the uterus of the woman's body. Others see abortions as a necessity. For example, if a woman is raped, the chances are she wouldn’t want to take the child to term. She wouldn't want an everyday reminder of being a rape victim. In similar cases, such as the mother possibly losing her life or a girl too young to raise the child adequately, abortions are needed. There needs to be a revolutionary way to make abortions more private and independent. The RU-486 pill is the next best thing to a surgical abortion because of the cleanliness and simplicity of the procedure. The RU-486 is more than just a pill; it's also an injection. The woman takes the pill given to her by the doctor, and the pill makes it possible for the fetus to proceed out of the body. Two days after taking the pill, the woman returns to the doctor’s office to have the injection. This injection of prostaglandin enables the fetus to be pushed out of the uterus. (Hoffman 199) This procedure can start the day after a woman becomes fertilized. The procedure can also take place all the way up to the sixty-third day of the term. This procedure is much simpler than classic abortions, and it is cheaper, less time consuming, and more consoling to the woman. The media over the past years has had a huge influence on women and their decision to having an abortion or not. Hearing about abortions and new laws being passed on whether or not to make them legal is much more frequent nowadays. Women don’t need all that on their minds when trying to figure out the good and bad sides of a possible abortion. Abortion clinics can also be a deterrent to having an abortion. Women have to sometimes get through the protestors outside just to make it into the clinic. Once they are inside, they have to have enough strength and determination to go ahead and carry out the abortion. The sights and sounds of a clinic sometimes turn women away at the last moment from going ahead with the abortion. Is that not too much for the women to deal with? Would it not be easier to have a pill that can be picked up at a drug store after consulting with doctors, and taking the pill on their own free will? This would change the way people of the world see abortions. The abortion would no longer be a surgical procedure that involves doctors and mutilation to a fetus with instruments and machines. As said in the essay, "RU-486 The French Abortion Pill and it's Benefits," "Surgical abortions often leave woman feeling psychologically violated as well, and often they lose confidence in their sexuality, simply due to the nature of the surgery." (Banwell 84) That’s one of the best benefits of the pill, it does not involve the large amount of medical procedure as a surgical abortion. With legalization of this pill, the option is all up to the parents of the unborn child. There is no media influencing a woman's decision, or protestors to make you feel guilty for entering an abortion clinic. The women of the world today should not have to fight against other people's morals to proceed with an abortion. People should stop trying to impose their morals on others; the right should be left up to them. Some people have different thoughts or morals on the topic of abortion, but everyone is different, if one woman wants to have an abortion, someone who thinks it is wrong should not try to stop them. The further development and legalization of the RU-486 pill will only help to make the abortion scene easier. The qualities of the pill make it much simpler to go about having an abortion without the hassles of a classical abortion. Bibliography: Works Cited Banwell, suzana S.
