She automatically knows who it is without even turning around. She calls him the devil. In a way the staff rubbing the back of her neck might represent that they have met before or have some kind of relationship together. I think that a big symbol in this story has a lot to do with the peoples names. Goody Cloyse was supposed to be such a good woman. She taught religion class and was so good. All of the people in Browns town were supposed to be so pure and good. Even Young Goodman Brown is supposed represent something good. He is the only one at the end who really wasnt evil, or so we thought. If Goodman Brown seen all of this evil and seen all the people who he trusted turn to evil, how is he supposed to have any faith in God? Finally, I think that if we analyze a story good enough we can actually find a lot more significance in the story then we really thought. There are many symbols in a story; its just a matter of finding them and understanding them. In Young Goodman Brown the symbols represent something totally different that what we actually thought they meant. This story was really about symbols and how you think it could mean one thing but actually turn into something totally opposite than what you thought it to be. ...
