small groups and how they work

complished. Surviving in a group with people of all types of relevant background factors can be difficult Each person is different and must be treated in a different way in order for the group dynamics to remain cohesive. If the group has a good working relationship most often they will pull together and succeed. The group dynamics are also affected by the environment in which the group is set, the structure in which makes up the group, and by what type of group it is. The leadership style of the group and the social influence processes can and will play a major role in how the group works. Is your leader an autocratic, a laissez-faire or a democratic leader? The status power of particular individuals is very important to recognize. Finally determine the norms of the group as quickly as possible. Violating the group norms is one of the fastest ways for a new member of a group not to survive. “Global competition, work-force changes, the impact of technology, and other factors have pushed organizations in the United States to experiment with team approaches to achieving cost effective, quality products and services.” (14) Teams or small groups will not go away. They are entrenched into today’s work force. The day of the individual contributor is almost gone. Knowing how small groups work today is knowing how to work.
