Many symptoms go away after a person stops using, but any abnormal tissue growth in the organs may not (Meer 71). Any drug can cause a person not to act the right way. Since a lot of drugs can go directly to your brain, they greatly effect your ability to act logically. Steroids are known to make a person self-centered. Many users become “stuck on themselves”(Clayton 35). Family and friends begin to mean less to them. Many come to a point where they only care about their own needs, and they have trouble caring about others. This is a very lonely time. Tommy Chaikin told the Los Angeles times that steroids “change you…[they] can make you an ego monster” (Nuwer 76). Users experience mood swings. They will feel happy one minute, then angry or depressed another. Users can also become aggressive and hostile. Some critics believe, “ a Jekyll and Hyde personality is common where even the slightest provocation can cause an exaggerated, violent, and often uncontrolled response” (14). Steroid users are known for their “roid rages”, and for no reason at all, the user can just snap. They can become angry with anyone and anything. People have become so angry, that they have committed murder. Nardo feels that steroid users have “such a hostile mental attitude” and that it is “undesirable, even dangerous in everyday life” (24). Everything good has to come to an end, and the feeling of greatness ends after you stop using the drug. This is when a person can fall into a deep depression. This depression is called “steroid-induced anhedonia,” and this is when the ex user feels that life has no meaning or joy.
