o the carnival. Before he left for the carnival he says to his servants, “I should not return until the morning”(77) he knew if he says this they would leave. Some of the things Montresor says are hard to understand because he says them but does not mean them. When Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall he says one last time, “let me implore you to return”(79); He says this more like a joke, it means nothing. Montresor has let his pride destroy any shred of goodness that he has. He never gets emotional and he is very calm at what he is doing, like it was planned out exactly. Montresor in the end when Fortunato was dead, Montresor walks away saying “In pace requiescat”(75), may he rest in peace. Montresor does not really care if he is at peace now. He just does not want to get caught. With Fortunado dead and buried, Montresor has won. Thanks to his deception he has the revenge he wanted for so long. There are no more insults or injuries for Montresor to tolerate. Fortunato is dead, never to be seen...
