It would have effectively shut down sites dealing with valuable societal problems such as AIDS, prison violence, human rights issues, etc. The Government is trying to correct a narrow issue with a sweeping legislative solution when the problem requires close, careful consideration. If pornograhpy is the main issue of concern among these politicians, then the reason for concern is valid. The internet is a vast space of information, and just like the real world, there are dark corners were illegal activity gathers. However, responsible adult web pages have taken action to prevent kids from gaining access to these sites. From services like Adultcheck and Ibill, which require major credit cards for verification and access, to parental control software such as NetNanny, which allows the administrator to restrict any content deemed necessary, there are abundant options when the question is how to restrict access. But, is it the responsibility of the government or of the parents to regulate a childs access? The Government should set forth policy that makes it mandatory to take preventive measures that restrict minors from being able to view obscene material. Parents, as well, should be charged with policing childrens activity on the internet as it has been done through books, television and movie privleges.Over the past several years, the internet has creeped into businesses and homes across the world. This explosion has spawned a tremendous growth period for the entire world. But particularly in America, the internet has become a place not only of business, but a proverbial soapbox for anybody to spread new ideas to everyone who will listen. This of course has sparked controversy in regards to what is acceptable on the internet and what is not.
