." Godfrey Hodgson mentions, "All America was whistling one of Dylan's tunes." What American youths were whistling was their first indication that life was about to stray off course. For example, Dylan says, "Wherever you roam/ admit that the waters/ Around you have grown/ And accept it that soon/ You'll be drenched to the bone." Not only is life becoming different, he says, but the field of perspective is also growing. Each American is no longer swimming in his own little lake. The world is a big pond, according to Dylan, indicated that each person is in deep water with everyone else. He continues: "you better start swimmin'/ or you'll sink like a stone/ for the times they are a-changin'." Instead of allowing his listeners to drift into the escapist tendencies of popular music, Dylan immediately alerts them that if they do not start fighting (swimmin') that they will surely die (sink).Dylan next asserts that the time has come for the people of the country to rise up against their senators and congressman to make sure their rights are being heard. He instructs the officials, "please heed the call/ don't stand in the doorway/ don't block the hall." The musician presents his audience with an image of thousands of people storming Congress just to make sure that the officials are aware of the counter cultural voice. With a hint of revolution in his lyrics, Dylan points to the possible disturbances that a pseudo-revolution would cause by saying, "It'll shake your windows/ and rattle your walls." And he does not leave his warnings only to the older officials and government workers. Dylan also warns the parents that if they do not understand the strife of their children, they should not criticize it. He clearly draws the generational lines that will function during the counter culture: "Your sons and daughters are beyond your command/ your old road is/ Rapidly Agin'/ Please get our of the new one/ If you cant lend a hand."
