Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra Francis Albert Sinatra was born on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken , New Jersey . He began singing in amateur shows in 1933 and formed a musical group called the Hoboken Four . Bandleader Harry James discovered Sinatra’s act at the Rustic Cabin in New Jersey in 1939 . Their best recording together , “All or Nothing at All “, did not become a hit until after the singer’s solo career took off four years later . Then during the early 40’s Frank Sinatra was getting involved in the jazz nightlife , his jazzy style developed with trombonist Tommy Dorsey’s band . Although Frank Sinatra was big in jazz usually in cool bands he also was big in films . He did over 50 films in his career , winning his first Academy award in 1945 for the patriotic short subject “The House I Live In” also won the award for best supporting actor in “From Here to Eternity” . He won numerous awards awards for his recording and even for television . Frank Sinatra was an American popular singer and also a motion-picture actor which was not common in those days . He was one of the most famous American popular singers of his generation . he sang with big bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey .He was influenced by Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday , Sinatra anticipated the decline of big band instrumental jazz music and helped establish an enthusiastic type of popular singers . Even though he was a great popular singer , he was well respected as a jazz singer . The natural swing feel and jazz colored phrasing of his singing , including his use of dynamics and delayed rhythms , have influenced numerous of musicians . During the 1950’s Sinatra teamed with a number of talented jazz arrangers , including Nelson Riddle , Neal Hefti , Quincy Jones and Billy May , and also produced a number of jazz albums now regarded as classic recordings like Swing Easy(1955) , In the Wee Small Hours (1955) , Sons of Swingin’ (1956) , Come Fly with Me (1958) , Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely (1958) , Nice ‘N’ Easy (1959) and Stranger in the Night (1959) . He also had many recordings with big bands such as Count Basie band and Duke Ellington band . The term bobby-soxer was used under Frank Sinatra name which was first used in the 1940’s to identify the young audience who sighed , squealed , sodded and swooned over Frank Sinatra . Sinatra was the original teen idol , everyone loved him and wanted to be him . Pat of Frank Sinatra’a appeal was his vulnerable , slouchy look and part was his way of caressing a lyric . Frank Sinatra was known for his way he would bent his voice like a trombone to develop an intimate style of certain slurs and eccentric phrasing . He was also known as The Voice , Ol’ Blue Eyes and Chairman of the Board , he was a superstar for more than five decades which is incredible . He even was involved in film musicals such as Anchora ,Till the Clouds Roll By , and On the Town . Frank Sinatra’s career blew up during the late 1950’s and early 1960’s when the Rat Pack was built . The original leader of the Rat Pack which was sometimes called the “clan” , was Humphery Bogart . You wonder were did they come up with the name Rat Pack . Their name came from Bogart’s wife , Lauren Becall . She said that they looked like a pack of wet rats one night when they came home from carousing and they came up with the name Rat Pack . After Humphery Bogart’s death in the late 1950’s , Frank Sinatra became the leader of the Pack . These guys were the hippest , coolest bunch of cats on either coast at their time . There were six members in the Rat Pack : Frank Sinatra (leader) , Dean Martin , Sammy Davis Jr. , Peter Lawford who was Jonh F. Keneddy’s brother in-law , Joey Bishop , and finally Shirly Maclaine .The Rat Pack made there home at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas which was the hottest spot in the Universe . As soon as Frank Sinatra become the leader of the Rat Pack it was stated that the pack was ahead for its time . The “Summit” meetings were the ultimate night club acts ever assembled and The Pack was responsible for that . Frank . Dean , and Sammy Jr. carried the bulk of the show . They would sing , tell jokes ,do impressions , and do “cut up” . They also made films together such as “Robin and the Seven Hood” and “Ocean’s Eleven” featured all of the members of the Rat Pack . The Rat Pack were involved in politics. Frank Sinatra and the others worked for JFK’s presidential campaign , they were supports of the campaign , they would do publicity and photo shots . Frank Sinatra even recorded a new version of “High Hopes” that become John F. Kennedy’s campaign song . But the relationship between JFK and Frank Sinatra soured making the relationship between Peter Lawford , which is JFK’s brother-inlaw , to become also sour . After a few short years the Rat Pack was no longer a band . But during the late 1980’s , Frank , Dean , Sammy Jr. all tried to rekindle the magic with a much-hyped tour , it was not the same , it failed . Dean was then forced to leave the Pack because of illness . The years of fun-loving and high living had taken a serious toll . Through out time the Pack was dying , Sammy Davis Jr. died in 1990 ,then Dean Martin in 1995 and more recently Frank Sinatra died in 1998 . The only members left from the Pack is Joey Bishop and Shirley Maclaine . After a brief retirement like Miles Davis , Sinatra resumed his singing career . In 1993 he released the album Frank Sinatra Duets , on which many of his standard songs were engineered as duets with other famous artist/singers . Contributors to the album included American singers Barbara Streisand and Aretha Franklin , Latin American recording star Julio Iglesias and even Bono , the lead singer of a Irish rock group called U2 .The album sequel Duet 2 (1994) includes collaborations with country and western star Willie Nelson , jazz singer Lena Horne , and popular singer and songwriter Neil Diamond . He ended strong with those albums and till this day bunch of songs from Frank Sinatra are becoming a huge hit still . There are still other hits which have not been heard in the public but do to Frank Sinatra’s death new songs from the record companies are in some way being produced into CD and tapes . This business is very money hungry . Frank Sinatra is not the only person that the business is making money off his death . Many companies save numerous of untitled songs just in case the artist dies so they can produce money off the artist , which really makes think if the music business is human . Many people knew who Frank Sinatra was but really did not know his personal life too well . Frank Sinatra has been married more than once , more like four marriages . Frank’s first wife , Nancy Barbato Sinatra is still living and is only one year older than Frank Sinatra . They were married for 13 years and he had his only children with Nancy . When the marriage died , Frank married a movie star named Ava Gardner . They got married in 1951 but , it lasted a short time . He was unmarried until 1966 when Frank met and than a couple of months he married Mia Farrow . She was only 21 years old and Frank was 51 . Of course this marriage did not last , the marriage ended in two years , more likely 18 months . Then Frank Sinatra met the former wife of one of the Marx Brothers , Barbara Marx . They got married in 1976 . Frank and Barbara have been married since , 21 years , until his death in 1998 . Many books and articles were written about Frank Sinatra . One which I found interesting and unique was an article on the children and how it was having a father like Frank and how the daily events occur . The children stated ‘Honesty , if you were to ask me what I believe Frank Sinatra’s most outstanding quality is , I would say , without hesitation , honesty . His honesty that comes through in the lyrics in the music .It’s this honesty that is heard in the sound of these Columbia recordings , made at a time when both Frank and the American Public was spoiled with the best songs . People said Frank is like Mount Everest for a songwriter : if you got Frank to do one of yours songs , it was done right .” The Columbia era was the children’s favorite period of their father’s career , so on of the children decided made a book project on that era and the songs that were hot then , but he was only about six or seven when this era occurred and really does not have specific memories of these songs ,but he said he remembers the feelings . Also the chidden witness the censor side of there father . They remember their father involved with the public and they also remember that their father was interested in social issue and politics . Also the effect which their father had during the war , making woman feel good about their men at war by the songs he sang and the kids remember that . But most of all they remember the songs . One stated “ My father took his whole generation and swept them away -literally swept them away with his wonderful lyrics and violin . I can imagine the romance that was in the air when my dad played his songs .” The children really loved their dad and saw him as a hero . They did not see their father as a movie star or an artist just as a person who was on T.V and they did not fear the father’s power , to them he Without a doubt , Frank Sinatra was a great musician , actor , citizen , and person . He achieved many things in which people only dream about . His songs touched people all over the world and was well respected by his peers and his fans . He lived well musical wise , but had trouble in some personal things like his several marriages . Frank Sinatra was very involved in the public and even helped some campaigns in his time . Over all Frank Sinatra was a hero to all of the Americans and his name will never die in the states and even in the world . He was the man of his generation and his name is still heard in my generation and generations to come . He was a legend and he will always be remembered I was glad I decided to do my project on Frank Sinatra . I actually learned things I was not planning to learn . It took time . but I think it was worth it and the information I got really was interesting . I got personal articles on Sinatra because I really did not want to make a biography on Frank Sinatra . I truly had a learning experience .It is a shame he died because he could of done more great music . Bibliography:
